  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Marbles has ANOTHER ear infection :-(

Mama Doe
Gave her a claw clip and once over at the weekend, and noticed a big lump of pus/waxy stuff in her left ear. Tried to clean it as shown by the rabbit specialist when she had her severe infection earlier this year but didn't feel like it helped much. Checked them again today and it is still gunky and had a look down with the little otoscope I've got and her whole ear canal is full of gunk

We're booked in at the vet for this afternoon. She's absolutely fine in herself which is good (nothing like earlier this year when she was very poorly indeed). Still it is such a worry. Does anyone have any experience with chronic ear infections in bunnies and how it is best controlled/managed?

Having swabs taken to identify the exact bacteria involved and the most appropriate abx to use would be useful. If the pus goes very deep down then the ear canal may need to be cleaned out under GA. Swabs could be done at the same time along with a skull Xray to see if there is also infection in the middle ear.

Ear infections can be a nightmare to treat successfully, sometimes the condition becomes chronic and it is a case of managing it rather than curing it. Management may involve longterm abx, non steroidal anti-inflammatories, possibly topical treatments with abx ear drops. There are also surgical options but each case would need to be assessed individually. Sometimes surgery may not be possible for a variety of reasons. Some surgical procedures are very invasive and they do not guarantee a 'cure'.

Good luck at the Vets xx

Thank you both! Unfortunately I fear we may be heading into chronic ear problem zone. We are at the vets now. Marbles is not impressed!

Marbles is fine! Just a bit of debris which the vet cleaned out, but no signs of inflammation or infection. Phew! Love this girl so much ❤

Glad to hear :D I've had an awful time with Alfie and his ears recently - my life revolved around the vets

Thanks guys, I'm so relieved!

It's such a worry isn't it? Is Alfie OK now? I had a beautiful Rex rabbit named Alfie when I was younger

What a relief for you:thumb:My bun Harry has an ear infection at the moment-his second.Last years was cleared with daily penicillin injections but this years is alittle more tricky to treat but weve had some success with Septrin as his current infection is resistant to penicillin.Hope Marbles continues to do well.Hes really gorgeous:love:
