  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore hocks

I came home from work to see a bit of blood on the kitchen floor, it was coming from Bertie's hocks, they look ever so sore. He is a house bun but goes out for a run in the garden everyday. What can I put on them please ? X

Sore hocks can be a secondary symptom of another problem such as arthritis. So in the first instance you need to get him thoroughly examined by a Vet to try to determine the exact cause. He will also need an analgesic anti-inflammatory such as Metacam.

Without being able to see the exact condition of the hock(s) it is impossible to give advice as to what, if anything, to apply to the affected areas. Sometimes applying creams can make things worse. If the skin has broken then there is an increased risk of infection getting in. This can cause very serious problems so that is another reason why a full examination by a Vet is necessary. The Vet may feel it appropriate to prescribe a course of antibiotics. Although this is not always the case, antibiotics should only be given when absolutely necessary.

Carpet can exacerbate sore hocks, so this can be an issue for House Rabbits.

jane said it all really. bisc gets sore hocks. if they've cracked, then we bathe with cooled boiled salt water and apply honey. bathe once a day, honey applied twice. don't bathe more than once as it will dry them out even more. i check them once a week and if they're looking very dry then i apply a little bit of cream. as jane said, you don't want to apply cream too often but once a week seems to work for bisc. and he's already on metacam so that side was covered.

obviously we took him to the vets when this started happening so advise that. :)
