  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny with poorly leg. u/d he's gone :(

Update on reggie. His leg is still causing him problems but there does seem to be some improvement. It is still sticking out a little but when he is hopping slower and turning round etc he is putting weight on it and bending his foot a lot more.

I didn't take him to see the specialist as I wanted to give it a bit of time to see if he improved with the metacam. It is a long trip for him (around an hour) if I am just going to be told to carry on with the metacam or something. I will be continuing to watch for imrpovements

Hopefully it is just an injury that is taking it's time to heal. Is he still on the metacam?

It took a long time for Fiver's leg to heal up when he had nerve damage and it's never been quite right since.

He has just finished his course of metacam, I'm wondering whether to ask the vet for more? He had 11 days worth.

I've had to have poor reggie put to sleep today. This morning I noticed both his back legs were sticking out and it looked like he couldn't move them, he had also weed all over himself. Took him to the vets (a different vet from last time). Vet seemed very knowledgeable about rabbits and discussed a lot of possibilities, ec, injury, breaks (though I told her about previous x ray), spinal infection she discovered that he had lost control of his bowels, had no feeling in his right leg with almost complete wastage (this has been not much use to him for 3 weeks now) and less muscle time in his left leg. Originally she did think ec and was going to give me treatment but then after feeling around his legs for a little while discovered a hard mass on his pelvis and so suspected the worst, a Timor and as it hadn't shown up on his previous x ray (so I was told by other vets) an aggressive one at that. She let me feel it and it was around an inch across.

It was so upsetting but I could tell he was in pain as his breathing had slowed and his eyes were half closed, as it had happened so quickly (he was using his bad leg pretty well a few days ago, I haven't been around over the weekend so not been monitoring him and my husband hadn't though anything of him sitting in a corner of the hutch as it was nothing out of the ordinary for him not to move much) it must have been bad. My poor reggie. Ruby is on her own now, I hope she is ok

I have requested the x rays from my previous vets, new vet is going to have a look to see if she can spot anything and let me know.

Thank you for your replies everyone, I am so upset. I didn't think I could ever be this upset about a grumpy stubborn little bunny! My son, who is 2, keeps asking where he is, he loved reggie, he doesn't understand :(

I am so sorry Reggie had to suffer and that you had to lose him in the end. It sounds like the first vets let you down by not conducting a thorough investigation into the cause. Big hugs to you and Ruby, she will need lots of head rubs now. Binky free Reggie.
