    Default I can't afford Ashley

Sorry for this post, I am just overwhelmed with this right now and have been worrying about it so much. Ashley has never been a cheap bunny to keep but I am a firm believer in taking financial responsibility for animals you choose to take on. However I have spent £800 in vet bills in the last month, this is frankly unaffordable for us and not something I can keep doing

As well as that she has to go back to the vets again this Thursday for which there will be a charge. She is also going to have acupuncture 1-2 times a week for a month initially, I don't know how much that is going to be or how long she will need it for and then after that she will need yet another dental and blood tests.

She is insured with Petplan however they don't cover dentals and most of her issues centre around her dental problems. Her excess is also £90 per condition now and she has several conditions. I got a little bit back when I claimed for the bill in July.

She is never quite right anymore, but her quality of life is OK and she seems happy enough as long as she gets what she needs. Some backstory on this thread.

Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do please.

It sounds like a really rough time for you both.

Out of interest, what vets practice are you using? Has she had a specialist referral? (I'm from Suffolk too, hence asking).

I'm just wondering whether she has abscesses starting on her teeth and because they are so tiny, they haven't been picked up. If that's the case then potentially her management may get easier and better.

all i can think is to do a payment plan with the vets and pay some off each month, if they will allow that. most will. of course, that is still expensive, but at least it wouldn't be all at once. x

    thank you for your replies

We live in Newmarket so the Cambridge side of Suffolk so Ashley goes to Iain Cope at cambridge veterinary group. We moved from Cambridge last year and took her to a more local one but it didn't work out. Iain is very good though. They did skull radiographs last week and no abscesses, unless they are too small to be seen, but he had a good feel of her jaw and couldn't find any swellings. She had an abscess about 3 years ago but hasn't recurred yet so we are always on the alert.

Unfortunately, as great as they are, they don't do payment plans or bill the insurer direct. There is even a notice up behind the desk explaining this now. So we have to pay upfront every time. I actually have a 0% credit card that I use for this purpose, but even though we pay as much as we can off when we get paid we can never pay it all off before another bill comes in. The bill just keeps increasing. A payment plan would be the same I guess.

But interest free is good? You don't have to pay the minimum each month - do what you can afford or pay when you get the insurance payouts. I can't really see what other options are open to you - an interest free spread payment cost is as good as it gets.

I've got an old horse & am currently up in the £4k vet bill region. This won't be sustainable long term - but tbh that isn't an issue as he is already 25. I'll keep going while his quality of life is good.

Hope you bun gets better quickly
