This is how I now get my medicine from my mummy. I hope other bunnies are good like me, but I'm a greedy bunny and I have yummy medicine :)

Doughnut - you are a legend!

What med is it?

It's metoclopramide, she has 0.5ml at a time, I then give her 0.1ml of metacam which she also likes now. In fact she begs for more medicine. She's a good little bunny.

So cute ... You are very lucky Poppy will take medicine like that she can't get enough but Moley oh no not a chance!

Awwwwww :love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love: how is it possible that every time I see Doughnut, I love her more? I just want to scoop her up and shower her in kisses and cuddles

Ah I'll let her come round and nibble your wall paper maybe that will put you off her! Other than that she likes giving and receiving kisses and you'd get lots of nose nudges if you don't take any notice of her.

Yesterday she was so sweet, she had her mad half hour running around and I sat on the rug next to her and she just did a really high binky, leapt high in the air and did a twist. She normally does a run up but this was from sitting still. It's so lovely now she is so full of beans.

Awwww yeah pretty please bring her round, she can chew whatever she wants as long as I get Doughnut kisses :D:love:

I'm so pleased she's better, I found the thread you did yesterday from when she wasn't well as I'd heard you refer to her illness before, but wasn't sure what had happened and didn't like to ask so I'm also really thrilled for you both that she's well again :D give her lots of kisses from me

Ah thank you. Yes it's been a year and visited numerous vets and a specialist who all said she was fine until I found one who I'm with now and said "oh my god, the poor little rabbit" when he saw the video. She had a throat legion which had turned septic and inflamed since it had been left 3 months and a gut fungi. He sorted all of that out but she still rubbed her throat and made the awful noises. From watching her I discovered that she hadn't toileted when she did this and when she did then she recovered. Her throat is either narrow or the muscles don't push the food along, that's why she's been constipated and in pain. Now she's on the metoclopramide it's worked wonders, she's back to how she was a year ago. Just goes to show you just can't give up on your pet, you know if they are unwell whatever anyone tells you.

I can't watch those videos any more as they are too upsetting but hopefully this is now a happy ending since she has been so well for the last 3 weeks. Thanks for being concerned about her. I've had great support on here and this year has really been a nightmare, seeing her in pain and not being able to do anything, I wouldn't wish on anyone.

When my mum comes over from Guernsey twice a year she is always after kisses as she loves her so much. Doughnut gives her some too, so she's very generous, although I do give my mum food to give her so that may have something to do with it!

 Doughnut bribes!!! I'm not surprised she loves her, how could anyone not love that adorable little face :love:

Aww bless her! Barney is like a little drug-addict with metacam but won't take metaclopramide willingly unless I mix it with carrot/apple juice or put it on bread. He gets 3ml twice daily so I have to use about two thirds of a slice of bread a day or about 10ml of juice, both of which aren't exactly the best things for a rabbit's gut

Wow that's a lot, she gets 1.5ml a day, is Barney a bigger rabbit than Doughnut she's now 1.2kg. I'm guessing she will have to be on it long term too.

Could you try it on a bit of weetabix, that's what I used to do, now she takes it willingly.

Yes, he is 3.5kg (ish, his weight fluctuates) and I believe the vet said he could have an even higher dose and three times a day if needed, but due to my work hours I can't get 3 doses in a day, really, and twice seems to be working well.

I've got an appointment with my new vet on Friday, so I'll have a word with them about what would be best to put it on. I used to put it on pellets but he doesn't get the full dose that way, as there is always some on the bottom of the bowl.

Sounds like Doughnut is on a high dose then considering her weight. The weetabix has always worked for me as it soaks it all up. I used to just crumble it up a bit and then syringe it on top. I think most rabbits like weetabix. She's not getting any any more though.

I don't think metoclopramide is that bad to stay on long term as I don't think there are many side effects or potential side effects. I'm going to ask the specialist when I see him next, but at the moment I just have to call up to let him know weekly how she's doing and then get a message passed back. I did find out from my local vets that metoclopramide is better to stay on than the metacam and that it only works while she is taking it. The propalin actually strengthens the uretha muscle so animals can come off of that but I don't think the metoclopramide works in that way, it only helps while they are on it so hence I think Doughnut will be on it long term.

I have cut her dose of metacam though from 0.6ml to 0.2ml as I don't think she needs it as the metoclopramide is keeping her well. It's just getting everything right isn't it to keep them pain free.

Barney is on metaclopramide long term, has been for about a year now, and no bad effects. He has a total of 6ml a day now but before was on 9ml a day. At the higher dose sometimes the poos were shiny, but otherwise no obvious side effects. He was on a 20kg dog dose of metacam daily at his worse times but when the metaclop is doing its thing he doesn't really need it.

We did try reducing the amount of metaclop he was on when he was doing well, but his weight dropped again :( So he is on it for the foreseeable future now. I don't know of any negative to this apart from cost and inconvenience though, so that's fine.

Weirdly, he has had propalin before as well, but his incontinence cleared up with a combination of this and baytril (not sure what caused it) and it hasn't reoccurred.

Sounds similar to Doughnut, her poops are shiny and quite sticky, which I know is the medicine.

I think Doughnut is dry now because before she was straining to go to the toilet but couldn't so was weeing herself. Now she doesn't have to do that because of the metaclop she is now dry. That in term has kept her guts going so she's not in any pain so doesn't need the metacam. I think she could do without it but the specialist wanted me to keep her on it at the reduced dose for a while longer, which is fine.

They said she was fine after seeing those videos??? How utterly utterly absurd and heart breaking. Thank God you found a decent vet. It just goes to show how hard it is to get a rabbit knowledgable vet.

Sooooo glad to hear that she is doing well on her new meds x

I took her to different vets a number of times and then I actually took her to the specialist twice and she stayed in for 3 days having tests. They noticed the noises and throat rubbing and said she was grunting and chin rubbing. They also noticed she was wet but tested for a UTI but came to the conclusion that she had just sat in her own urine. I said she is constantly wet though and they said they didn't observe it. When I got her back the specialist said she would be happy to have a rabbit like Doughnut as she was perfectly healthy and it was normal.

I took her home and was distressed seeing her that way so did the videos. I sent them to the specialist saying I'm sure this isn't normal and she said no that is perfectly normal, that's when I went to yet another vet then the specialist I'm with now. I made a complaint again the specialist to the practice manager and sent the videos, she had another vet at the practice look at them and surprise surprise he thinks that's normal too! Even though Mark took bloods and found a really high level of infection, a cut in her throat which was severely infected and a high gut fungi. My next option would be to go to the County Court to get my money back. Mark said he would do a report for me, so I may do this. I just feel upset that they sent her home to die basically saying she was healthy.

I think I may be the only person to break down and cry with relief when Mark said she was very unwell.
