Advice - Shed/Wendy House Set Up

Hi girls and guys,

I'm looking for some advice, help and pictures of those with shed/wendy house set up for their rabbits.

I currently have a pets @ home hutch, my 2nd in 3 year's even though she only uses this in summer as winter she was in a side shed. But we have now moved and her hutch is not in the best condition, so I'd like to get her a wendy-house style set up so she can use all year around. Iv seen some lovely pictures in the picture folder but I have no where to start so Id love some help, please.

I can ask hundreds of questions, but I think just be easy to ask for help on everything to do with making in a rabbit home. Where did you buy yours? Made it rabbit proof? summer and winter proof? flooring? Windows, plastic sheets or wire like hutches? Animal friendly paint? What's needed indoors? Just everything, I do have a run which I would like to get 1 of those plastic tubes and connect them both. My garden is all grass, some uneven, what would i need to make run safe from foxes and escaping? and would I need to put hutch on wooden planks to keep off grass.

Thank you x

Don't know whether you've looked at pictures and details of various set-ups in housing section - there are some really good ideas there and I'm sure you'll find something that would suit you.

hi
hopefully be able to answer some of your questions for you, although don't actually have a shed!

1) Personally I would buy a shed rather than a playhouse, unless you already have one, which is why most people use playhouses anyway. My reasons are : taller, easier to use and more spacious. Actually shed's are probably cheaper if you actually look around, wendy houses tend to be expensive because they've been painted and have verandas ect. hope that makes sense! also sheds go up to a bigger size so you can add shelves and things and put old hutches inside. I also like sheds because they are waterproof, warm if it's insulated and big enough to sit in with your buns. Garden sheds can be bought from everywhere, it's just a case of knowing what size and style you want exactly or you will be blown away by the number of sheds for sale.

.... you get the point ;)

2)Rabbit proof just equals no corners edges or walls available to chew or dig up, also easy clean floor and walls as you know what rabbits are like. :D I would put lino on the floor as this is cheap, easy to clean and bunny proof.

3) for this i would insulate the hutch(plastic sheeting, insulating foil, plywood) which also means it's sutible for winter and warm enough for you to sit in there. For summer it might get quite hot so you would just need to make sure windows are open for breeze and air circulation(but covered in mesh so bunnies can't escape) and a good idea is to get a high stable door so you can keep the top half open during the day.

4)hmm... animal friendly paint... I think most stuff when dried is animal friendly, i would just pick a colour and check that it's friendly when chosen the colour.

5) indoors, just a litter tray,a hidey place and bedroom area( old or small hutch works well) shelves and things are great for rabbits to have different layers as shed are tall enough. You need toys, cat flap or runaround (http://www.runaround.co.uk/) tube but that's about it. Check out other threads for inspiration!

6) to make it fox proof I would try and put paving slabs under run, if not dig up some turf and lay some mesh down and cover it with turf again, as it is painful for rabbits to walk on mesh. Also weigh it down, make sure there is a roof and strong galvanised mesh.

7) are you going to have a hutch on the floor? and doesn't it come on legs already? but you could put planks of wood underneath it. For the shed I would buy a shed base, makes it last longer and prevents more insects ect coming up from the ground and delays rotting by a long way.

hope this helps, forgot what I was writing halfway through so sorry for rambling x

This is my playhouse/run set up, I have a catflap leading from the shed into the runs.

I bought it from B&Q for £150. We line the inside with carpet as our rabbits were litter trained, our new one isn't. And we added a shelf inside for fun/extra space.
I haven't painted it or anything like that, so I can't really help with that, but for covering we just have a big plastic sheet to put across them all, also bought from B&Q.

Can I ask if you attached the run with anything or is it just stood next to the playhouse? And did you take of the mesh or just cut a hole x

We didn't attach it with anything, we cut mesh around the catflap and bent the edges around the catflap so that they weren't sharp.

To attach the two runs together, we just have cut a holes in the mesh of both runs and put masking tape around the edges so they aren't sharp. It looks a little untidy I guess, and I do intend to cut the whole bottom out of the mesh in both runs, just haven't got round to it.
