  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Advice needed: bunny not her usual self U/D back to normal in no time!

Hey, our newest member is seemingly off colour.

She had her food and was playful this morning as usual - she takes food from the pot before I get chance to put it in their bowl

Not interested in free play time this eve (usually she is up to LOTS of mischief!)

Flopping out a bit more than usual, though she does enjoy to flop

I cleaned out her scent glands which were blocked, all I could see was abnormal (though maybe for her, I've not looked there on her before)

Eyes bright, ears ok. Not sure on teeth as she wriggled sooo much when holding her I thought I would let her be after cleaning her bits.

Her abdomen is soft and squishy but I may have felt a lump briefly.

Her breathing was fast but I was freaking her out.

Her spaying scar has fur along it, could it be ingrown? - the only other thing I can see that could possibly cause issue.

She wasn't into her food at bed time and is loafing in a small area she likes to relax in.

She doesn't seem to be showing signs of pain either

The food hasn't changed.

Only other thing is that we began a new hay bale from the local farm place last week - there is some dried brown oak leaves and some twigs we may have missed - we are removing them as well as possible. I've looked online and seen that the brown ones are ok so I'm no longer worried about toxins as their levels drop as the leaves die and dry out. Plus she and Malteser are eating the same and he is fine

She is full of fight as I have scratches all over my hands and chest!

I'm bothered about the emergency vet as it is outsourced to a place that told me they don't have bunny specialists when I was looking for a vet (Its a new fancy place with all sorts of fancy stuff but I feel it is more cat/dog oriented). I want to go to my usual vet first thing in the morning so any advice on how I can help her this eve would be good.

I have baytril, lapizole and Metacam from last year when Malteser was poorly. I can also syringe feed her some pellets - if she will allow that is

I checked her teeth (she was not impressed)

I can only check incisors and they are a good length and aligned correctly. I felt her cheeks and jaw line and all felt ok.

We decided to go to the emergency centre as I saw her turn ip her nose to water from her favourite bottle.

I wasn't overly impressed but I'm fussy. She was given pain relief and gut stimulant as her tummy was tender. I asked him to listen to her tummy and he said it was fine. He could feel her poop ready to leave and her stomach was small. Will see how she is tomorrow but most likely will take her to our own vet as I like him, he is thorough and doesn't need to be asked to check over something obvious.

Vet said may be start of stasis, very very early stage but didn't seem to have a clear thought on the matter.

She had a little hay as she waited for us to pay. I moved her fave bottle up to her little feeling sorry for herself area and she drank about 15-20 mls so some improvement.

I hope we never need out of hours again as I won't know what to do, better get finding somewhere though I guess

she could just be a bit off colour because its moulting time, spring puts bunnys in an odd mood sometimes

She was fine the next morning! I thought Malteser was off his food a bit but I think he ate Lolly's share of the food when she wasn't well

She has been fine since, we were told to take her to our own vet for more pain relief but she hasn't been off food again so she hasn't had any other meds. Such an odd thing, she really wasn't her happy bunny self at all. She did a bit of a sloppy poop but that was it. Everything has been fine and dandy! Back to causing trouble and jumping on my feet to stop me going to do my uni work, bless her.

Maybe it is the warmth, she did have a tender tum though too. I don't know, it will remain a mystery I guess!

Glad she's got better so quickly! Fred sometimes has times where he'll refuse food and look really uncomfortable and just not himself - the first few times we rushed him to the vet for gut stimulants and pain relief, but the next time I decided to leave him for a few hours (obviously keeping a close eye on him) and he just started eating again himself. Sometimes I think he just likes to keep me on my toes!
