Eating garden grass?

bluedragon

Young Bun
Yesterday and today because of the lovely weather we let our two bunnies out into the garden for the first time. Prior to this they had their hutch and run area (not on grass)

They've been eating hay up until now with set amount of pellets as well around noon-1pm. They seem to be fine and were right away eating the lawn grass! But we only let them run around a short while.

What considerations should I have for the bunnies running around and eating lawn grass? Let them munch as much as they want? Limit time to 30 minutes? hour? More? Less?

They are both about 3-4 months old now.

Limit their time on the grass. If they are let to their own devices when they first go onto grass, they usually munch too much and can get GI stasis. As its their first time, I would only give them 5 minutes on the grass. Then after a few days of this, increase the time to 10 minutes, and repeat gradually. Best to increase the time gradually, than increase too fast and risk stasis.

Yes, only small amounts of grass to begin with. In fact after their first day eating grass I wouldn't let them eat grass the day after, just to make sure they don't react to it.

Before letting them run around and eat what they like it's a good idea to cut some grass by hand and feed it to them in very small amounts .

Totally agree with the others, build us very slowly, 5 mins to start with. Be especially careful as the spring grass comes in.

Hi thanks for the advice, they've been out over a few days now a few minutes at a time and seem to be ok - still eating and drinking their normal hay/water fine.

Over what kind of period would I be looking at to eventually let them run around for hours/most of the day eventually?

I would probably increase it quicker. I think when I put Doughnut out a specialist told me to start with 30 minutes and then increase it every day. Once they have been out a few hours I doubt a day outside will make any difference as their stomachs will be use to the grass by then. If you notice an soft poop just limited it down again. I had no trouble at all and in fact I'm sure Doughnut is a lot healthier in the summer when she gets to eat lots of grass.

Actually rabbits are mostly like to eat carrots but Garden Grass is good for them only in this way if the grass is fresh or new grew into the garden. Because some garden's grass is totally spoiled and not able to eat for every animal it may create disease in animals

Don't worry too much. As long as you do it gradually, the rabbits should be fine, and they will enjoy greatly the fresh grass. Just keep an eye on them. Their hay intake will probably diminish because I noticed that they tend to prefer fresh stuff to anything else.
