Post surgical adhesions?

Can adhesions start to cause problems years post surgery? What are the symptoms of post surgical adhesions?

Can adhesions start to cause problems years post surgery?

I've been told that it can be the case (by FHB). I think it's more likely that they would start to cause problems within weeks or months of surgery but apparently adhesions could be there but not causing real problems for a long time and then progress to causing problems years after surgery.

I have a 5 year old rabbit who was spayed at one year old (according to previous owner), she has frequent stasis episodes which have been put down to surgical adhesions. The previous owner said she had no health problems and FHB has told me it is quite possible the problems have only started in the last 2 years ie 2 years post-surgery. The adhesions are around where spay surgery would have been and around her bladder.

What are the symptoms of post surgical adhesions?

I can't speak for all symptoms but I have two rabbits diagnosed with adhesions, one has frequent stasis episodes (as above) where the intestines are uncomfortable during digestion due to constrictions caused by the adhesions.

The other (male) has post-surgical adhesions from bladder surgery. I have seen him look uncomfortable after eating a meal and only eats part of it then goes back to the rest later. I can't 100% say that is caused by adhesions but when the vet told me of his adhesions she said this could be a possible behaviour pattern that he's got into because of the adhesions.

There's possibly others but these are the ones I'm aware of with my rabbits. I've also had another rabbit who has had blockage surgery and been told that if he forms adhesions that he's more likely to have another blockage than a rabbit who hasn't had this history.

Thank you for that. My Poppy has frequent impaction boughts, she doesn't get full impaction but very sluggish motility, you can really feel her spay scar (she was spayed 2.5 years ago) she is due at the vets at 12 for a scan but I was going to ask vet about adhesions.

That does sound very much like Erin's history/symptoms. I hope the scan gives you some answers.

Well Poppy has had scan and xrays. Vet a bit stumped so has sent them to a specialist to gave a look at. She thinks neoplasia or adhesions. Will have to wait and see what the specialist says.

Answer is yes -

adhesions typically cause problems within weeks or months but can be longer.

Also if bun has adhesions form they may not cause problems until there is a period of dehydration or some other very slight gut problem which would not cause an issue in a non adhesion bun but will cause problems in an adhesion bun.

Lucy Blue (used to be Jemma's Lucy) who I have just taken on almost certainly has this caused by a late full term spay.
