  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New Kit
Anyone know what this is? We just bought our female mini rex about 2 weeks ago at the local feed store and noticed a few days ago that she had a scab type of thing on her back. It doesnt seem to cause her any pain and it doesnt seem to itch her or anything. She doesnt mind when we look and poke at it. It doesnt seem to be getting bigger in circumfurence but does seem to be getting...scabbier?

Anyone recognize what it might be? She's otherwise very healthy and is eating a healthy diet of hay, free choice salt and a high quality rabbit feed.

Thanks

You'd probably need a skin scrapping to be 100% sure what the cause was. The most common skin problem/most likely is mites, which is generally easily treated so often a vet would go ahead and treat for that and then do more detailed tests if that didn't resolve it.

I'm not sure what products are available your side of the pond and whether they are over the counter or prescription only :) It's usually an injection on drops on the neck once a week for three weeks - the active ingredient is usually ivermectin. It needs to be for rabbits too, don't use anything marked for cats etc. as the doses are different. Avoid anything/anyone who suggests shampoo/baths - you don't want to bath a rabbit if you can avoid it ;)

If it's mites then it should clear up really quickly :)

Thanks for the reply, I had thought about mites but she isnt itchy all over which I thought they would make her just generally itchy?

It kind of looked like ringworm which is something my horses can get, but I didnt know if bunnies could get ring worm??

Some bunnies scratch more than others with mites, it can be quite localized, particularly if you spot it quickly. Bunnies can get ringworm, you'd need to go to the vet for a skin scrap to diagnose it, you really can't tell for sure just by looking. Ring worm is a fungus rather than a bug so the treatment is different.

You probably already know, but ringworm is contagious to people and other animals so wash your hands well and if you're holding him then an apron or similar you use just whilst handling him would be a good idea :)

can you get medicine for mites through a vet without the vet having to actually see your bunny? And if anyone has experience with this, about how much did the mite meds cost you?

Most of us here are in the UK so the laws on drugs will be different. Here ou can get mite treatment without a prescription but it might be completely different where you are.
