Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD Outbreaks 2014

I don't think anyone has rhd2 vacc at the moment :-( I spoke to the vet earlier, she has seen 13 cases in the past week. Samples have now been sent for analysis so we should know strain in a couple of weeks time. Her feeling is that the symptoms are more consistent with rhd1; in a way I hope that's the case as it is at least preventable in most instances.
Yeah I know what you mean, it's ao acary that there's an awful disease going round that we currently have no preventative for!

Update: the lab has confirmed that the outbreak in Ipswich is definitely VHD :( It's now gone off for testing of the strain, but it's definitely VHD.

Another update: this has been confirmed as variant 2. Anyone in the area please be VERY careful about foraging etc and about changing shoes/clothes etc before seeing to rabbits.

Oh goodness, my bunny has to see a specialist in Ipswich in two weeks, is there anything I can do to make sure he doesn't catch it?

How sad :(

I hope the vets can get supplies of the vaccine post haste ..

I would call the Practice and ask to speak with one of the Vets. They will (hopefully) be aware of the situation and will be able to offer you advice.

Oh Stormy?

It would be very very bad luck, as presumably the vet will be ultra careful with hygiene. There's nothing you can currently do apart from keep him away from other rabbits and use your own towels and vet beds for the vet's table, I would suggest.

Yeah, that's all he needs! [emoji21]

Santa messaged me and suggested I call my vet and ask them for advice so I will do that tomorrow. I always take my own towels as they have familiar scents on them so would do so anyway, I'm just concerned that the nurses may go from rabbit to rabbit without washing their hands and things like that. (Though granted it is a referral vet so I don't think they get a huge amount of rabbits)

Good advice :thumb:

Hope all goes well - I'm sure it will! x

Hi all

Took my bunnies to my fab vet today (Justine at Woodlands in Ivybridge, Devon) and they will have the RHD2/VHD2 vaccine in about 2 weeks.

They have had two confirmed outbreaks of VHD in Ivybridge, Devon, in the past 4 weeks (it was a pair of bunnies) who were vaccinated. Apparently the drug company are paying for second postmortem to check which strain of VHD and check for vaccination fail. So really is an issue here.

My vet will be calling me once the vaccine is it - two vials have my name on them!!

Vhd 2

Hello everyone I'm new here but have a really sad story to start with and a warning to everyone,
first of all I am a 55 year old mum of 5 grown up kids the youngest my only daughter is a keeper at a monkey haven she has rabbits and I have guinea pigs amongst other animals so as a family we are animal mad my husband has built 3 chalet bungalow in our garden one for my 21 piggys and 2 for rabbits and store room we both clean every single day have fly zappers and use Anigene ( used to be Trigene ) as our cleaner, we live on the Isle of Wight, the past 10 days have been horrendous out of her 15 rabbits she has lost 10 we suspect of VHD2 luckly they were all injected against myxy and VHD1, so the vet asked for all bodies to be taken to them we even had to dig up poor Ben they are being frozen to help in the fight against VHD2 biopsys from 3 of them has gone to a lab in Scotland and we are awaiting for the results but both me and the vets agree its likely to be VHD2 it happens so fast they go quite we both noticed this change in our rabbits my little girl hid under a hutch and died with out convulsions most did have them there was no blood so far on any of them Ben being the first to die went stiff very quickly both me and the vet noticed this its these facts being used in the fight against VHD2, the vets have to notify certain places they got their first of the new injections in today but as our 5 left could be infected they have to wait for a few weeks for them, as soon as you know your vet has them in get them done please this has devastated us both,
we have bleached everything they come into contact with as bleach kills the virus, in fact we have been doing it every day have just got some Virkon s to spray round the sheds to get every spot we have foot baths only me and my daughter are allowed down there, we have to change clothes as well, sorry this is so sad but I need people to know we are waiting for confirmation but thought Rabbit lovers need to know NOW to protect and try to save, ours is the first outbreak on the island and every ones been commenting on how rabbits in the wild have all but disappeared , we know why now they are dying underground, I will keep you all up to date now off to check my furrys fingers crossed no more deaths , sweet dreams Ben Caramel Noodle Rolo Cookie Oreo Toffee Ted Pumba and Timon

Michelle welcome to RU and I am so sorry to hear about your losses.

Thank you so much for posting. I hope it's OK to cross post to a thread about the VHD2 virus, even though I realise it's not yet confirmed?

Sending hugs x

How absolutely horrific for you and your Daughter  I am so very sorry

How heartbreaking for you :( Personally I would want to discuss with your vet whether they will vaccinate all your other rabbits ASAP. When I lost one to RHD2, my vet was of the view that I needed to get all the rest vaccinated ASAP as it would be their only chance. While in theory the vaccine should only be given to healthy animals, we decided that there was nothing to lose - if they didn't get vaccinated they would probably succumb...and if they did get vaccinated, it might be caught in time and they might survive. There is a research paper from France from a couple of years back which talks about an outbreak being halted by vaccinating all the remaining rabbits. I took all of mine to the only vet in the country who had the vaccine at the time and all the rest survived. If you can't get them vaccinated, then really strict biosecurity is so important - as it's likely that the virus will be all over your house, so foot dips, clothes changes and hand washing etc are all really vital between your remaining bunnies, as it would be so easy to walk the virus around between them. I have everything crossed for you and your remaining buns xx

the problem is our vets are only getting the injections now and again and they have a waiting list am on the list but I am going to phone round other vets tomorrow how long until we can consider our rabbits clear ? we are using the right cleaning stuff so far its cost us over £50 but that's no worry as far as our pets are concerned, we hopefully will know result tomorrow for definate

I think you can only really consider your rabbits to be clear/safe after they've had the vaccination. The vaccine takes 7 days to provide full immunity for 12 months (though the confusing data sheet would imply that in high risk areas you need to revaccinate after 6 months).

I'm sorry you have to go on a waiting list for the vaccinations - bit of a worry!
