How and Why did you decide on your vet?

Bitzy

Mama Doe
As the title says really, was it on recommendation, trial and error, asking them squillions of questions ..... or some other reason?? :)

They are a 2minute drive from my front door. Answered the questions i asked them professionally and well in my opinion.

I phoned 3 vets when looking to get Biccy neutered & vacc'd. 1 told me he didnt need vaccinating as he was a house bun, 1 wanted to charge me £50 per vaccination and £150 for the neuter, and this one has been awesome that i use now :)

My mam already used these vets before I was born, but I'm happy with how they do things. They got all 4 of my rats through various operations despite one having chronic lung problems which impressed me.

Well when I first got my first rabbit last summer, I knew I'd never thrust my 'normal' vet to treat him or to neuter him. The vet was more for big animals and cats and dogs rather than rabbits.

So I did some reserch and found a good vet about half an hour away. They had a good website. So I emaliled them abou neutering and they emailed back and it all sounded great.

So then Cooper got ill all of a sudden. he stopped pooing and eatting hay. But he had a blockage from a fleece blanket. So mum rang up the small animal vets I was emalinfg a while back to make an appointment and they said they also have another clinic which is just 15mins away from us with the same vets and that but they just do different shifts between the places.

So we went there and there excellet. I also bring my cats ad dogs and guinea pigs there now too as I realised that stuff my old vet was doing was wrong and he didnt treat the animals that well and that.

I'd used mine with all my pets since they had opened a 5 minute walk away. Luckily, they are pretty good with small animals and were amazing with the guinea pigs when I rescued them.

They know the rabbits (and me) pretty well and I'm generally happy with the vets.

The one I go to at the moment was recommended on here but its a 45 min car journey and it just stresses the bunnies soooo much! They were physically shaking and their little hearts were going mega fast y'day by the time we got there. Its a brilliant practice but I don't know if I can keep putting them through the trauma of it all!

I just rang the local RSPCA centre and they've recommended the vet that's 10 mins away from us saying - and I quote 'for smallies, the best one in the area is XXXX, they're really very good'!!

Might give them a call and ask them a squillion questions ....... I used to take my budgies there and they were good with them on the rare occasion we had to visit! (nice big waiting room too so can keep away from the dogs)! - This is their website : http://www.tvhc.co.uk/

ETA : I'm also going to ring the local Animal Rescue and see who they recommend! :)

recommended on here

(my mum has always used them, but i didn't know they were a rabbit savvy vet. was pleasant to find out that i had one so close :D)

I used the one that my family reccomended, and then found it was good on here I think.

I knew there was a big animal hospital near by and when Pie went down with stasis the first time, I had no idea what was wrong. It was a saturday night, 2nd January and saw the emergency vet. She was fantastic, knew exactly what the problem was and how to treat it and gave me advice on how to prevent it.
Been going there ever since, and if it wasn't for one particular vet there Pie would not be here now. I am very lucky to have the vets I have (even though they are not cheap!

Initially I used one that was closest to me and I liked the fact that they had another surgery so if they couldn't fit me in at one, they could usually fit me in at the other one. I was always impressed with their service too.

Now though, I use the one I work for - very handy indeed  and

Thanks everyone. I just telephoned the vets who were recommended and spoke to a receptionist who told me that Myxo and VHD jabs could be given on the same day and that it would only cost £15 each rabbit for both vaccs!!? (which seems very cheap - current vet charges £40 per rabbit for both vaccs)!

Anyway, thought I may drop them an email asking a few questions to try and suss them out (and for them to redeem themselves for their receptionist not knowing basic stuff).

So, what questions would you ask a vet to try and find out if they were rabbit savvy??

Might put this question on a separate thread actually :)

I have two fantastic rabbit savvy Vets for the two sets of bunnies.

1. The trio. If I hadn't changed from the local Vet I was using, Totti would be dead :(. He was being treated for stasis and had been kept in for observation. When I collected him, I was cheerily advised "he's fine, he's eaten a dandelion leaf". He was 6 years old and I knew him well - he was not fine so I switched to the rabbit savvy Vet that the Rescue I was helping out at used. He needed a further 3 weeks of intensive treatment.

2. The Pretty Boys. The Rescue that they came from uses a rabbit savvy Vet local to me so it made sense to continue with their treatment there.

I would avoid them like the plague having been given that information alone.

two recommendations, and it is the closest. Plus the prices are reasonable and the vet is really really nice and gentle and a good vet.

I met our vet when she had an open day - have never looked back.

She is just such a wonderful person and I trust her 100% with ALL my pets.

Plus it only takes us 10 mins or so to get to her - We are very lucky

It's just up the road :D

Got lucky though as 1 of the vets specialises in small animals with a particular interest in rabbits!

She helps out at all our charity events and is always on the end of the phone/e-mail if we need her. She also runs her own 24 hour emergency service and we have been known to visit her in the early hours of the morning with a sick animal :(

My vets in London, they were just around the corner. Very friendly and helpful. I had them for 10 years.

However, when my chinchilla needed neutering he honestly told me he could not do it so was referred to a chinchilla savvy vets. They were a long way from us.

Now. A top rabbit savvy vet by recommendation from RU.
