Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

anabolic steroids question

bunny mad lisa

Mama Doe
I Have a rabbit, teddy, with kidney faliure and me and my vet have agreed that when he worsens we are going to try anabolic steroids.
I'd like to know if anyone has used them, what name or if they can point me in the direction of more info.
At the moment i am pleased to say he is doing really well but i know there will come a day when he will get worse so we want to be prepared!

I don't know what steroids Lettie was on for her liver cancer but I can check my records. They gave her a good extra 6 months :)

I have had them for a guinea pig - ended up having an injection every two weeks, but started off at 3 weeks.

I have had several Chronic Renal Failure Buns on an anabolic steroid aswell as other meds. It certainly bought them more good quality time :)

ETA The anabolic steroid was Nandralone

anabolics

laurabolin is the most commonly used at the moment. It improves appeite and increases metabolism and artificially, kidney filtration. the only side effect is possibly eventual weightloss as they also break down protein so good diet is important. They are palliative care. YOu could offer bunny hard boiled egg white for protein.

Does anyone think steroids would be any good for Sue? She only has half a kidney working and to maintain her weight she is on a high sugar, low calcium diet. Is it worth me discussing steroids with my vet? It's not something he has mentioned but given how every day with her is a bonus anything that may prolong her good quality of life would be welcome.

I am glad your bunny is doing well at the moment Lisa and hope you don't mind me asking about Sue on your thread.

When was her last blood test to check her renal function ?

Fortekor to lower her BP and thus reduce the workload of her functioning kidney may be useful. An anabolic steroid might help slow muscle wastage. A Multivitamin injection once a week was also of benefit to my Renal Failure Rabbits :)

She has never had a blood test I don't think. She had an X-ray as she lost so much weight which didn't respond to Panacur and that picked up she only had half a kidney working.

Will have a chat with my vet and see what he says. George is due his myxi jab and Peggy's ashes are ready:( so I have to make an appointment anyway.

Thank you Jane. I am always amazed at how much you know about bunnies:)
