  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cookie has never been a big hay eater but since ec he won't eat any. I can really cut back on veg and pellets because I need to try and keep the weight on him. Any ideas how I can get him to eat hay?

I had teh same problem with Shaun. He wont eat hay and I cant cut back pellets as he needs the wieght gain.
Maybe you could try different hays to try and encourage him to eat them.
and get his teeth checked regulary.

If this is head tilt then be very aware of the teeth. They wear down really oddly in head tilt bunnies. I would also say maybe try the taster pack from the hay experts in case his tastes have changed?

If his head is hurting them then chewing hard foods like hay may hurt (not sure what meds he is on, etc).

What meds is he on? Anti-inflammatories may help.

I would also get his teeth checked asap as Sky-O says

He's on metacam, baytil and panacur. This is second course of treatment since the ec beginning of august. His teeth was checked then and all fine. He doesn't have problems with eating veg or anything he just doesn't like hay.

Have you tried a different anti bio? One that may be more effective?

I would still suggest a dental check because his teeth will wear down strangely because of the angle his head is at and how that will effect his eating.

If his head is tilted then possible ear infection which means you are going to need a stronger abx than baytril. It is rarely effective at penetrating pus or bone in rabbits. As this is 2nd course of treatment think stronger abx definitely on the cards.
