  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Kidney disease caused by a parasite (not E Cuniculi)?

OK, this is a long shot, but has anyone come across kidney disease caused by a parasite that isn't E cuniculi?

Years ago my old vet (no longer around to ask) once mentioned that he had seen kidney disease caused by parasitic infection, in both birds (chickens I think) and rabbits, and that therefore it was also a possibility in guinea pigs.

Anyone heard of this? :? Many thanks for any info.

Thanks v much for the suggestion, Jane.

Trouble is, I know (even 3 years on) that he didn't name it, so it won't sound/look familiar if I see it! All I know is that it was definitely not EC, as the bunnies were being treated for that at the time, and it was something different...

Think I'm going to have to have a mad conversation with my current vet...

OK... next question, in preparation for mad phone conversation with vet, is....

....how do you pronounce coccidiosis???  Heeeeeeeelp!! I'm nervous enough as it is without not being able to say the word!

Love it!!

Thanks - I will be sure to censor myself appropriately when I speak to the vet!
