Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Smelly special poos and a smelly Leo

Wise Old Thumper
I'm a little bit worried about Leo. The past few days he's had quite a lot of uneaten smelly poos.

I know my Nana, god bless her, comes round and always gives the guineas and bunnies some form of food because she hates them looking and squeaking at her. So I don't know if she could of possibly given him a bit too much spinach or something like that.

Now I don't know if it could purely be down to the fact he's got his cone on, still, so he can't eat some of them sometimes. Possibly the fact that he's had antibiotic injections for some time now and I've heard that they can upset a bums tum. Or if it is just too much greens.

I've tried to put him on a purely hay diet. But my parents have given him a small egg cup full of SS last night because he was apparently going "absolutely mad for food".

He's due back at the vets again tomorrow for another check up but I'm personally not going thanks to work. I'm going to get my dad to ask about it when he takes him.

I'm just wondering if it's something to be worried about? They are very smelly. :?

Why? That would be a concern for me personally :? He is unlikely to be able to reach his bottom properly or possibly access his food and water easily? I don't like cones on rabbits... but that's just me personally.

Yes antibiotics can very much upset the delicate flora of bacteria in the guts and cause an overgrowth of certain bacteria - which means that bun - if he can reach his caecotrophs, may be discarding them due to this dysbiosis and the 'smell' which you describe. If they are not good for him, he won't eat them. I think some probiotics would be VERY helpful here - fibreplex for example.
Stress, too much starch (from too many pellets) certain veg etc can all contribute towards caecal dysbiosis and bun rejecting caecotrophs but to be honest I should think it is the antibiotics combined with his cone.

He's still got his cone on because he had some major surgery 5 weeks ago which he's still healing from. Even with his cone on he managed to somehow pull out some of his stitches and have a chew of his wound so after discussions with the vet we've decided it's the best thing for him.

I'll get my dad to ask about the fibreplex though, thanks!
