Fasting before Neutering

Bentley's getting neutered tomorrow, and they said we have to fast him the night before.

This is the only vet who does rabbits anywhere near me, and the receptionist was talking, so I'm just going to fast him two hours before the surgery, the minimum. But after the surgery, they may not feed him. That is 10 hours without food. I am so worried. :cry:
 
If you are talking about a bunny, which I think you are, you must not ever ever fast your buns, they arent like cats and dogs, they need to be continually eating to keep the gut moving. Its likely that the receptionist didnt know what they were on about but if it was a vet that told you to do this then I would be quite worried.

Over here, in England, we feed our buns MORE before they have an op to give them extra strength.

Please don't fast your rabbit, a rabbit needs to eat to keep its guts going. Your vet as given you the wrong information and I would make them aware of that:D
 
I am talkign about my bunny, I'm definitely not fasting him the night, I guess I just won't fast him, I do know it's pointless.

I'm going to call them later and ask them about it.
 
Its not 'pointless' - its quite dangerous!! Buns can die from a condition called 'stasis' if their guts stop working.
 
Not wanting to worry you any more than you probably already are but do you think it might be better to put Bentley's neuter on hold & look for a vet who knows more about bunnies?

Maybe print it off, have a really good read & then search for a bunny savvy vet in your city. Perhaps phone any rabbit rescues local to you & ask them who they recommend. You need to look for a vet who specialises in 'Exotics' - rabbits come under this catagory.
Here is a quote from that pamphlet which relates to your query -
Take your rabbit to the vet well before the operation date for a health check and to discuss the procedure. Ask if any pre- operative blood tests are advised. Don't change the diet in the week or so before surgery. Rabbits can't vomit, so they don't need to be fasted before surgery. They should be offered food and water right up to the time of surgery and as soon as they wake up.
This is basic rabbit stuff & IMO don't trust Bentley to anyone who seems not to get the basics.
 
No, i mean it's pointless to fast because they can't throw up.
I called, and it was the receptionist's mistake, you don't have to fast. :D

The vet receptionist told my friend this too and she didn't know. She only mentioned it to me in passing and I told her to phone the vet and tell them that they were wrong to advise that. Her bun could have died!

Just shows how ill prepared some vets are.
 
the rceptionist at my vets told me that aswell, even when i said but they cant vomit she just told me they need to be fasted
 
I think the receptionist was not paying attention because all other animals need to be fasted, because when we called back she clarified that they didn't have to.
