Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Willow Ball warning!

leong

Warren Scout
Hi all, just had a lucky escape with Dee after she decided to eat a quarter of her willow ball overnight, she usually nibbles it and rolls it around her pen however we came down in the morning to find a quarter gone. Cue a few hours later on observation and she started showing symptoms of bloat, sat hunched, eyes half closed, lying down whenever possible with her stomach making serious gurgling noises.
Took her to the emergency vet as soon as we spotted the symptoms and she was given the usual pain relief and gut stimulants and luckily was absolutley fine within a couple of hours.
No more willow balls for her!

Oh my gosh, is this normal??

My two have those trio of balls from Woodlands or Naturals....

Thanks for the warnng, I think I will be supervising play with them!!

Thanks Jane, thankfully she's right as rain now :) . I had no idea they could cause a problem like this and for Dee there was no other explanation. I've done a bit of investigation around this and have noticed that the willow ball she was given appears to be softer (and slightly greener inside) than the other one that was purchased at the same time. I don't know if this was a contributing factor or not but it's certainly something to be aware of.
TeflonsShadow, these were the Woodlands twist ball (the large size).

Yep, that's the one that caused problems here :?

I don't have one but I've eyed them up to purchase a few times, very worrying. Has anybody informed the retailers/ makers? It sounds like these should be removed from sale or come with a warning.:?

What a relief! Who knows what might have happened had you not acted so promptly.

Can i just add a picture that shows that I think demonstrates they should always be used supervised...
