You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Panacur side effects?

Ling Jai went onto panacur last week as his back leg issue seemed to worsen and he was dragging it, I asked the vet if there was any chance it was EC related so we put him on panacur, the leg seemed to improve that very day. Since sunday though I noticed Ling Jai did not pooh and seemed bit less energetic, he's just done a few poohs now so the stasis might be easing and I have let him stay out of his cage tonight to walk around to get exercise. If by the morning he's not much improved I will have to take him in for Baytril or something, but is it common to see any side effects with pancur:?

I've not heard of any, but thats not to say that there are not any......hope someone with more knowledge comes along soon x

I've never heard of any. i had a faulty tube a couple of years ago and ended up giving a rabbit 6 days worth instead of one and my vets phoned the poison unit who said it wouldn't harm him at all as it is tested at over a few hundred times the actual dose:D

Hello :wave:: )

Some buns can be more sensitive to medication than others. Most of the buns I've looked after have been fine on panacur, although I did have one that developed slightly looser droppings after having it. It may be an idea to put some bio lapis or avipro probiotics in your bunnies drinking water to help his tum and support the good bacteria in his gut.

It isn't always a good idea to put a bun on baytril, unless you know he has a bacterial infection as if he's alreadys in stasis it may make it worse.

Most buns are prescribed metaclopromide if their buns tums have slowed down but if he's passing droppings that's a very good sign : )

The best thing to do is make sure he has access to lots of fresh hay to get his tum moving, fresh water and a probiotic and encourage him to move about. Is he eating and drinking well?

Hugs,

Nicola x x x

panacur is one of the safer drugs to give your bun & as said can be given in excess of the actual recomended dose without problems. There apparently can be side effects if going over the 28 day course and giving it too often but in the short term it is usually fine. Sometimes buns wont eat their caecotrophs or have slightly more squishy poo's and I guess that possibly in combo with vet trips/stress your bun could develope stasis but as far as I am aware panacur doesn't "cause" stasis.

metacam, metaclop and zantac are the most common prescriptions for stasis. The metacam would be especially helpful with EC if that is what he had.

Well he seems to have eaten a little carrot and some of his porridge today, he hardly drinks water and I've noticed him drink from his saucer more over the last day. I called the vet to book an appointment and she told me to go to see the specialist at the hospital because she can't deal with his myriad of problems as she's no expert;)

Aww..bless him at least he's eaten something. Does he eat pellets? Has he got access to lots of fresh hay?

It's good that he has a saucer to drink from as it may encourage him to drink more. I use bowls for my buns drinking water now as they tend to drink more that way.

At least your vet has been honest with you and advised you to get in touch with a rabbit savvy vet. Better than her prescribing something that's isn't right for your bunster.

Love, Nicola x x x

he's got his pellets, but hasnt really touched them and he's never eaten hay all his life, but that's there for him to if he wants a nibble, we are going to the hospital at 4pm and hopefully get him some medicine:)

I'm glad the first vet didn't want to see us, last month she suggested so much was going wrong and he was getting old and we should consider letting him go peacefully, she obviously doesn't know about the quality of life he still has:(

Hiya : )

That's the thing with vets..they can do more harm than good if they're not rabbit savvy.

I'm sorry... I don't really know much about your dear buns health problems.? Has he had his teethy pegs checked?

There's obviously something up with the little man. Pain or discomfort from something which is causing him to go off his food and resulting in his tum slowing down. Metacam (painkiller) will help with any pain or inflammation as it's an anti inflammatory too but the vet needs to figure out what's causing the pain/discomfort.

Fingers crossed you'll get some positive feedback from this other vet you're seeing this afternoon.

Noserubs and positive vibes for Ling Jai x x x

yeah he's already on metacam for a year now and he had a major dental in january, but he seems to be eating his treats and had a forridge in the garden yesterday, hopefully it's just be a routine gut needing to be stimulated situation:)

Aww..bless him x

What's he on metacam for...? Sorry if I missed it. Is he on Zantac as well? Only reason I ask is that long term use of metacam can cause stomach ulcers in bunnies. The zantac counteracts this and helps protect the stomach lining.

Lots of vibes for your precious boy x x x

he's not on zantac, he's been on metacam because his back legs aren't as strong as they were and he loses balance. I was watching a video of him on my phone from 2 years ago to the day and he was running from the garden back inside at lightning speed and down the stairs and everything, that's all in the past now:roll:

on the way to the vets I noticed Ling Jai's face seemed a little puffy. The vet decided he has some puss built up around the jaw probably infected slowly after januarys dental and they are going to put him under to drain it tommorrow, he hasn't been eating because of the pain and his gut itself is fine. They told me to leave him in over night and I started tearing up, because he has been through soo much recently and he hates staying away from home:cry:

Oh dear sorry he's had to stay away from home but at least this vet has identified what's wrong and knows how to treat it. Hope he does well. Keep us posted.

Hello x

Sorry he's had to stay away from home for the night ((hugs)), but as Dustyrabbit said at least this vet has been able to get to the bottom of why your bun is off his food. Fingers crossed he'll be back home soon with his mum : )

One thing that I would definately recommend is that your bun has Zantac if he is on long term metacam. When I first started out a bun of mine had metacam over the course of a few weeks, but no zantac with it and he developed a stomach ulcer. It's just that with your bun being on metacam for 12 months or more...long term use can cause stomach ulcers.
Zantac works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces and is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. Might be worth mentioning it to the vet to see what he/she says.

Lots of vibes for Ling Jai and hugs for you x x x

Ling Jai stopped breathing on the operating table on wednesday, my worlds been turned upside down and I haven't stopped crying, the whole family is devastated, I feel soo angry and guilty becuase I left with the vets:cry:
