  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

When I fed two of the rabbits this morning I noticed that Rucksby's breathing was odd. I took him straight to the vets and the vet thinks that he has inhaled something or its brochitus. Rucksby has got to take septrin for the next few days. Also I will feed him separately to make sure that he is getting his share.

The poor little mite. Its such a shame because they are so well looked after. I don't want it to develop into anything like snuffles.

He may not be eating much because it's difficult for him to eat and breathe at the same time

I would call your Vet to ask if Rucksby should be admitted for intensive nursing care. *If* he does have a lower respiratory tract infection then sadly that is potentially alot more serious than 'Snuffles' and needs aggressive treatment from the outset.

I hope Rucksby is able to recover, but as I say, admission to the Vets may be necessary.

Jane, thank you so much. He slept in the conservatory last night with his friend Phoebe. Got up early and checked on him. He has just wolfed some food and is up to mischief. Also no breathing sounds either.

I am thinking that it might be a reaction to a poisonous plant because my mum always brings them bags of dandelions. I might have missed something 'rogue' lurking amongst the leaves.
