  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam advice please

Morning All.

Hibby is still very unwell and is on Lapizole, Zantac and Metacam. On the bottle of metacam given to me last night it says "10kg given once daily" it is written on the box that this is the advice from Bristol. Does this sound right to you? Last time she was on Metacam it was 0.6kg.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated x x x x

Maybe that's something to do with the weight of the animal? I know the latest bottle of metacam i've got from the vets last night is in a box that says metacam for dogs(!) and the syringe in there is marked off in kilos, but the vet told me not to use it and gave me one in mls.

Joe is 3.5kg in weight and was on .6mls once a day, which has now been put up to 1ml per day which i can either give in one dose or split into .5mls twice a day.

Hope Hibby is feeling better soon x

I *think* the maximum dose for metacam is 0.4ml/kg/24 hours but hopefully someone else will know to be sure.

The metacam I got from the vet was also for dogs and had a huge syringe in but the vet gave me a small syringe and advised the does (was a long time ago now, but around 0.5ml sounds right, my buns are 1.5kg each)
xxx
