  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

First vet visit - what should I ask?

Young Bun
I'm off to the vets with Barry this afternoon and as he came from an unknown background I just wanted him to have a check up and start his vaccs. Will a vet be able to tell his age? I felt so stupid booking the appointment because they wanted all his details and I just don't know!

Now I know they can't have myxi jab and VHF at the same time, which should I get dine first ? I live in a rural area with myxi rabbits everywhere so I guess that's the priority? I'm going to ask about neutering although he's too young at the moment. Anything else? Worming?

Many thanks, from a total bunny newbie!

Your vet will normally give Myxi first then VHD two weeks later. If you can ask your vet about Lapinject VHD. Most vets use Cylap but it can have side effects, so if they will order Lapinject in for you that would be good.

A good vet will know that 10% of the myxi jab needs to be given intradermally (into the skin layers). Some vets do this in the ear, some do it in the scruff as they are going in or out of the main injection site. If you aren't sure the vet has done this don't be afraid to ask as its very important.

Before any vacs are given your vet will check over the bunnys ears, tummy, teeth etc to make sure he is in good health.

As far as I am aware there isn't really a way of asertaining an age, but if you want to know if he can be neutered just check underneath to see if he has testicles, if he has then as long as hes healthy and a good weight he can be neutered.

Thank you - that's really useful, I didn't know any of that. Will write it down and take it with me! My vets are great with cats and dogs but not great with the guineas, never taken a rabbit so not sure.

He doesn't have any balls yet - I checked. I think he's just a baby really. What age do they drop? (Poor boy, had me poking about down there!)

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated

Can be as early as 10 weeks I believe, but normally around 12-14 weeks.

In regards to the worming which I forgot to answer first time, I personally don't routinely worm my bunnies (though some members on here do) but it is advised you do a one off 28day course to protect them against a disease called EC. You will need to pay particular attention to cleaning the cage on days 21 and 28 using a bleach solution. Your vet will be able to provide you with some paste to do this (Panacur) but you can buy it fairly cheap on the website vet uk. I would only repeat this if my rabbits went into boarding, I got a new rabbit or they actually started showing signs of EC.

Don't worry about being a total bunny newbie, we all started there. :)
