Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

help!!! hemaphrodite bunny?!?!

New Kit
Hi,

I have two netherland dwarf bunnies one male and the other female- or so i thought. the female was sexed when we got her and the breeder said it looked like she would be unable to have babies. The vet checked her over and said she had a membrane covering a small part of her *lady bits* and that she possibly could be a pseudo hemaphrodite. We took her to the vets a month later for her shot and the vet noticed that she had grown what looked like testicles! the vet wanted to check her after we had the male neutered last week and now she has full male parts but the vet said she is definately not all male?!?! im waiting to hear back from the vets as they are getting intouch with a reproductive or exotic specialist to find out what they are going to do to her.

I am sooo worried that the operation will be risky if she is all messed up inside. the vet recommended just to open her up and see what she has rather than giving her a hormone test and scans because of the cost. Does anyone know annnnything about this or the procedure? ive seen on the internet that they can impregnate themselves but the babies dont survive?!?

im worries as if she does turn out to be more male i wont be able to bond her again with the other male we have!!!

help!!!

thank you x

firstly you can bond neutered males together, although it can be a little bit more tricky so don't worry too much on that score yet.

secondly I think it would be a good idea for the vets to go in as if for a spay to have a look inside and see what is going on at the same time as they remove his/her plums. If she does have female girlie bits then they do need need to be removed to protect her from uterine cancer. if she does not have girlie bits then she will have had a slightly more serious op than the normal boy neuter BUT probably no more serious than a girl spay which is generally a very safe op.

I would say that the chance of getting herself pregnant was slim to none.

I agree. It sounds like you and your vet are doing all the right things and as you would have your bun neutered anyway it sounds like the sensible option just to have a look. I think they'll both be fine together too :) good luck with everything and let us know how everything goes. And also if you need any tips on bonding or anything else don't be afraid to ask :)
