Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help please rabbit with gurgling stomach and not pooing much.

Hi, my rabbit snowy went to the vets on wednesday because he was not pooing or eating much the vet didn't really know what the problem was but gave me baytril, metacam and oxbow food for him today there is not much change he is still not eating much or pooing and his stomach gurgling is really loud, I am disappointed that I was charged £84 for all this medication to make him better and it hasn't. Has anyone had this problem before with their rabbit?

Loud gurgling usually means excess gas. Does his tummy feel hard or look bloated?
I would advise you to take him to another vet, if possible one specialises in treating rabbits, for a second opinion. If he is bloated, teeth grinding, weak or floppy he needs to see one urgently

i agree that he needs to see another vet.
if he is not eating you will need to syringe feed him (im assuming the oxbow food the vet gave you is for this purpose? )
continue with the metcam pain relief is essential in treating this.

my rex Enya used to have a lot of problems with reoccuring stasis. each time she would have an injection of maxalon (to stimulate movment in the gut), pain relief (either via injection or oraly (metacam) ) as well as vitamnin B5 and B12 to stimulate her appetite.
encourage him to eat by offering his favorite foods...i often found somthing strongly scented like pasley/basil or mint helpfull.

Hi
sorry to hear your bunny isn't very well and I would urge you to find another vet (if you start a thread to ask, someone should be able to tell you where a bunny savvy vet near you). You did absilutely the right thing by taking Snowy to the vet.
The vet should be checking that snowy hasn't got a blockage, and if not should give gut stimulant, vitamin B12 and a painkiller at the very least.
Has he been drinking at all?
If I know my bun has a little gas, I give them a tummy rub and chase them round a bit to get it all moving.
Dandelion leaves or herbs can be good to get them eating again.
I would get a second opinion today. Good luck,

Thank you all for your advice there is still no improvement I phoned the vet today and he has given snowy some zantac for him to take 3 times a day he is having 2ml of metacam and 2ml of baytril a day I have tried giving him apple, carrot, dried fruit even been trying belly rubs but I don't understand why this has happened it seems with the medication his symptoms are getting worse. The vet I trust annadene is not in till tuesday morning.
Why do rabbits have a lot of stomach problems?

I'm not sure why he's been given Baytril, as this is an antibiotic and can mess up bunny's tummy even more. I would really urge you to get a recommendation from here, as it sounds like he needs a gut stimulant and maybe even fluids now.

Hi,I dont mean to scare you but if snowy hasnt eaten much since Wednesday he really needs to be admitted and have proper veterinary care or he could die.I would advise you to take him to a bunny savy vet ASAP

Hi, When I took him to the vets wednesday evening I was concerned about the vet because he didn't actually tell me what was wrong with him he just gave him 2 injections and it took him 20 minutes to work out the dosages as well as looking through a book so god knows what he was doing.
I was so concerned that I ran out to see the receptionist and demanded to see another vet the receptionist said yes I know he is not very experienced if this is the case why wasn't anyone assisting him.
I personally believe he has been misdiagnosed and I will phone them tomorrow to see exactly wrong with snowy. He has eaten a little bit of hay, nuggets and apple today and beginning to poo different shape poos I hope this is a sign he is slowly getting better he still seems lively running around.

I'm glad your bunny is showing signs of improvement. I think it's really important you try to find a rabbit vet that you trust though. Rabbits are not like little dogs or cats and they really need a vet that understands their unique physiology.
I hope someone reading this will be able to recommend a good rabbit vet xx

Hi Snowy has been back to the vets this morning because of little change with the medication, the vet now suspects something wrong with his urine he tries to pee but nothing comes out still not eating much or pooing much again.
I have been told to still give the medication and if no better in 2 days an xray is recommended to see if he has stones, the vet said she couldn't feel any stones but an xray will hopefully show whats wrong.
I am very worried about him he doesn't want to run around just hunched up.

I have lost two bunnies to problems which caused them to develop stasis (one of them had a severe ear infection), it took me ages to find a rabbit savvy vet, sadly too late to save them

I now go to Campanion Care in Portsmouth
http://www.companioncare.co.uk/portsmouth.html

I normally see Anthony, have seen Mackie before, sometimes see Pavlo and last time saw an Australian lady ALL have been brilliant with my bunny.

I believe my friend "pretty lupin" on this forum goes to the Southampton branch of companion care, I think Mackie and Palvo work there as well.

This is what I wrote on a previous post:

Biscuit has had several episodes of Stasis, last time we were told to keep her on metaclopromide and zantac for 5 days so that her guts are working properly again. So maybe even after he has got better carry on with the meds for a few more days.

The fibre plex is brill, Biscuit would take this with no trouble.

We also got some biolapis from vets uk ltd (can also buy at your vets) which you mix with water, she takes this really well too.

We have found the following things can set Biscuit off:
some visitors
Not moving enough
The room being too cold (now her room is at 18-19oc day and night)
Trip to the vets
Carrots
Banana
Pellet food
Anything suddenly scaring her

AND also for no reason at all, the other day she was running around the living room, munching hay and when she was put in her room, she hunched up, tummy to floor, didn't want to be stroked, ears cold and didn't want to eat anything.

She has on numerious times been checked over from her nose to her tail including being knocked out to do her teeth etc (btw they don't think she has any problems with her teeth).

As soon as we notice her acting strangely we now, get the correct dose of metacam into her, 0.5ml of zantac, 1ml of infacol

Then rub her belly, get her a heated pad, get her moving and wave fresh herbs under her nose.

If after 2 hours no better, get metaclopromide, bio lapis and fibre plex into her. Rub belly again.

Thankfully we have only had to force fed one time, so up every two hours feeding her.

This works for us, other people will have different methods, she can go months and months being well then sods law she will wait until a bank hol, sunday night or a monday morning to become ill.

Really you need to get to a different vet, 2 days maybe too late.

Thank you biscuit bunny for your help, Snowy went all day without pooing and as soon as my husband comes home from work Snowy seemed to liven up and ran around the living room pooing a little and weeing a little but happier.
Overnight still not many more poos we gave him his medication and all day today probably only done around 20 poos and seems to eating a little more then yesterday.
Biscuit bunny if you don't feed your rabbit carrots what vegetables do you feed yours on? I have been feeding him apple, carrots and that woodlands food with hay in it from pets at home also the woodlands camomile harvest hay.

Hi there

Glad to hear Snowy is a little brighter :)

Mine has spring greens, brocolli, curly kale, spinach, carrot tops.
She also has NO pelleted food or any bunny food mix (this was agreed with the vet).
She has no fruit, any fruit needs to be given in tiny amounts if at all.

She eats unlimited timothy hay from West Willows Hay, and also Green Burns oat hay, she has plantain as a treat.

She also has fresh and dried herbs.

Did you manage to see a different vet?
