Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help please, to vet or not to vet?

Young Bun
Hi,
I noticed my little bun nibbler had a large scab (about the size of a 10p) on her back 2 days ago. I'm not sure how she hurt herself but I looked and it seemed to be healing well so I left it alone. Then i checked yesterday and there seemed to be a sore / exposed part where she has either hurt herself again or scratched a small part of the scab off. Do you think I should take her to the vet? If it was my cat I'd bathe it with salt water and leave it to heal but as it's a bun i'm not sure. Any advice appreciated.
thanks

if it looks sore it could be getting infected.. id take my bun to the vets and get some anti-biotics :)

Has she had any vaccinations/injections in the last few weeks ?
If so it may be a local skin reaction which should scab over and heal.

If the wound looks very red or weepy then I would get your Vet to take a look at it incase there is infection present. If it looks clean and dry and not inflammed just leave it alone and check on it a couple of times a day to make sure it is continuing to heal.

thanks for your advice, the wound is red but dry - no weeping, doesn't seem infected. Both my buns recently had myxi and vhd jabs so could be a reaction.

One of my buns once had a nasty skin reaction to Cylap VHD vaccination. It sounds exactly like the sore/scab on your bunny. Was quite horrific to look at and I'd never have Cylap again for that very reason. They've never had a reaction to Lapinject (so far).

Hope your bunny is doing OK.

Thanks, is there anything I can bathe it with? It looks like it's healing but i just want to stave of any infection.

my vet once said i could use Salvon or savlon (cant remember what its called) when Alvin had a scab because of injections, obviously to take him in if it didnt heal right..

I would not apply anything to it as IME it just aggrevates the skin more and draws Bun's attention to it making them scratch at it and/or lick it.

If you remain concerned ask your Vet to take a look. If it was a reaction to the VHD Vaccine (more likely than to the Myxo one) then it needs recording in your Rabbit's Clinical Records anyway. The Vet may want to prescribe a systemic anti-inflammatory (Metacam) as skin reactions to the VHD Vaccine, if they occur, can be quite nasty and wide-spread. So minimising the inflammatory response is a good idea.
