  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Chewing a lot = dental?

VikkiVet

Mama Doe
Phoenix, who has always been more of a chewer than Indi, has recently started chewing much more vigorously and frequently and on more 'solid' objects

It used to be just cardboard, occasionally carpet  etc but not she eats the wicker basket, and has started on the bookshelf and the loft stairs!

Is she just being naughty or is this a sign of dental issues?

She is otherwise fine, eats and drinks well, goes through masses of good hay

None of mine have ever chewed solid stuff when they needed a dental...although plenty of mine will sit there chewing on nothing (known as the 'chewing gum face' here) when they need dental work.

If it's unusual, then perhaps get it checked out?

fine as far as i know - i'll clean them out in an hour and keep an eye on it. i have seen her eating caecals though

I think Ginger and Pickles chew wood far more when they're nearing their dental time. I'd get them checked out by a vet (are you not one?) just to be on the safe side.

Could it be a behavioural reaction to the change in living arrangements? They could also be picking up on your stress over the past week or two :?

She started doing the chewing before anything really changed, appart from me hoovering properly, which i have done before!

I have told mum and dad to keep a very close eye on them, and to take them straight to the vets if she stops eating, pooing or they hear her teeth grinding. But she really doesnt have any other signs of needing a dental. She's a perfectly healthy weight and that hasnt changed at all.
