Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Neurological problems in young rabbits.

Sadly at the sanctuary where I work one of our young rabbits, who is only 10 weeks old, was found collapsed in the run yesterday.

She was rushed to the vets and it is suspected she has neurological problems. At the moment she can stand on her feet although is a little bit wobbly, but if she is lying down she cannot get herself to her feet.

At the moment it is suspected she has e.cuniculi and she is being treated for such. But the vet isn't 100% certain it is, and is running other tests as far as I am aware.

She has been x-rayed and scanned to rule out any damage to her spinal cord, no abnormalities were found.

Up to being found collapsed she was acting like a very normal, active young rabbit. She was born at the sanctuary and was reared out on foster with her mum and the rest of the litter. She had her Myxo vacc 2 weeks ago and has never had a health problem.

One of the other rabbits in the litter also now has a slight head shake. All of the litter are being treated with Panacur, as is mum.

Is there anything other than e.cuniculi that could be causing these problems?

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the link Jane, makes interesting reading.

The baby bunnies currently are only showing neurological signs of illness, everything else seems to be working fine. The first one to fall ill just has a slight lack of appetite, but that could stem from feeling unsteady on her feet coupled with being away from her litter.
