Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Glucosamine & Cod Liver Oil - anyone know dosage for rabbits?

Herbert'sMum

Warren Scout
Have been discussing with my vet the possibility of Herbert taking the above to help with his arthritis. She has administered to cats and dogs in the past, however, not rabbits. She has looked through her medical notes and can find no recommendations regarding dosage for rabbits but nothing to say it would be harmful, so is happy to give it a go.

She is doing further investigations as this is all new to her, however, in the meantime is there anyone who would be able to advise regarding dosage of glucosamine/cod liver oil for bunnies? Herbert weighs approx 2.7kg and also regularly takes Metacam/Baytril.

Thanks in advance.

Personally I would not give cod liver oil at all. It contains very high levels of vitamin A. Fish oil is the one for arthritis anyway (ie. from the fish body, not the liver).

edit: not sure about giving fish to a vegetarian anyway. It's different for omnivores, eg mice. Hopefully someone will know more!

Thanks for the advice Sarah.

I haven't replied until now because I cannot answer the question.
Glucosamine improves joint lubrication. It was originally extracted from green lipped mussels, & is still extracted from crustaceans.
It did wonders for my very creaky joints. I feel it's worth pursuing vigorously.
Perhaps "Hugo's There" could help? or your vet might contact a specialist center.
I agree totally that cod liver oil is both unhelpful & unwise.
Another alternative is acupuncture.
PLEASE will you let us know your results.
