How much should my rabbit weigh?

Young Bun
Hi there

I have just got a new dutch baby boy who is 8 weeks old and weighs 1kg. My dutch doe is 8 months old and only weighs 1.4kg. Is this normal or should I be worried about her?

It's impossible to say just from that information I'm afraid - in much the same way I couldn't tell you if it's normal that a baby weighs 8lb or my mum weighs 10 stone...that might be ok if she's 5ft 5 tall, or she might be overweight if she's 5ft tall, or underweight if she's 6ft tall...it's all relative :?

It's possible he could be that size, baby English rabbits often weigh more than 1kg at 8 weeks, and although they are a larger breed, if he was from a small litter with only 2 or 3 babies he could well be that heavy. The doe sounds a bit underweight for 8 months, should be more like 2kg or a bit more.

I just had my 8 week old holland lop weighed at the vet's and she is just barely .45 kg (1 lbs.) I know hollands are smaller than dutches, but I wouldn't think a dutch would be double her normal weight.

What are you feeding the dutch?

Thanks for everyone's advice.
I Got the Doe from a rescue center last September and with hindsight she was obviously not 12 weeks old as I was told - more like 6. I got 2 does and one failed to thrive at all and was ill all the time - we eventually had her put down last month. - I was gutted as I'd nursed her every night for 6 months. Anyway, I am beginning to think that the doe we still have (Ginger) didn't have a very good start. I'll ask the vet to check her out again - she seems healthy enough but she is very small.

The new bunny (Sooty) looks massive compared to Ginger. I got him fom Pets at Home and they said he was 8 weeks old. He's off to the vets this week for his jabs so I'll get him checked over.

I'll try and get some photos - can you measure the rabbit's length? If so, how and from where to where? How can you tell a rabbits age?

thanks

I took my "baby" rabbit to the vets yesterday for his myxy vaccination. She tells me that he is at least 4 months old more like 5 !! She reckons the pet shop just said he was a baby cause they thought I probably wouldn't take him otherwise.

Have to say - the pet shop has gone down in my estimation.

Will be taking my 8 month old doe for a check up in a couple of weeks so will ask about her weight.

What do you feed the bunnies? :)

I have 2 dutch cross girls and they both weigh around 2.3kg :)

xXx
