  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Experience with ear infections?

Hi all,

I got a new rabbit last week (she’s a lop and is around 5/6 months old) and went for her first check-up at the vets today. I mentioned that I’d noticed she was scratching her ears/head a bit more than I’d expect, and it turns out she has a suspected ear infection. She’s healthy other than that. The vet still needs to look at the swabs properly before getting back to me with confirmation and treatments, but she said she thinks it might be a fungal infection.

I lost a rabbit very unexpectedly last month and so another bunny health problem so soon is getting me worried as you might expect! Just wondering if any of you have had experience with ear infections and treatment. I know my vets aren’t particularly rabbit-savvy so I’d really appreciate any comments from those that have treated this effectively :)

Firstly is it possible to find a Rabbit savvy Vet ? This really can make a huge difference with every aspect of our Rabbit’s healthcare. If you are in the UK then this link may be helpful

Unfortunately I do have rather a lot of experience with Rabbit. ear infections. I am sorry not to be able to post a lengthy more personal response due to my failing eyesight. But I hope the information on the following links may be useful

Thank you so much for these links, they are really helpful. With regards to the vet, my plan is to go with whatever my current says for now (in terms of treatment) but if that doesn’t seem to be working I’ll try make an appointment with my nearest RWAF listed vet.

Good luck :)

My bunnies with ear infections were not lops, and they had middle ear infections. Sending your bunny positive vibes for a full recovery.
