Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Gi statis

Unfortunately Marley took a turn for the worse and at 5.30 we rushed him to the vets. We had to make the hard decision to let Marley go. I'm absolutely devastated. My poor boy. [emoji235][emoji195][emoji174]

I am sorry that Marley is unwell. What treatment has the Vet prescribed and did the Vet mention any possible primary cause of Marley's gut stasis ?

There is some information about Gut Stasis on the following links :

Hi, welcome to the forum. I'm sorry that Marley is unwell. Can you provide a few details of his current condition e.g. vet treatment, duration of illness, symptoms etc.

Hes got a pain killer to have once a day and he's got the recovery food to syringe feed him with...but he's not taking that very well. He started to eat yesterday by himself but today he's barely touched anything. I've tried everything! No, we think that maybe they ( I have another rabbit called Rosie who he lives with) had something to eat that caused it?? Rosie had a very noisy tummy Monday afternoon which I've never heard from either of them before but she is fine. It's such a worry

Hi there Rach and welcome to the forum

So sorry to hear about Marley.

Here's some info I have found useful:

http://anyflip.com/dvpt/hzvv/basic

http://rabbit.org/gastrointestinal-stasis-the-silent-killer-2/

I have also found (as have many others on this Forum) Infacol to be very useful ...

Infacol.co.uk - it's infant gas meds, and you can give one ml every three hours. It's been a lifesaver for so many of us, along with tummy rubs.

Good luck xx

I assume that the Vet also prescribed some medication to try to get his GI tract working again- 'prokinetics' ? The drugs usually prescribed are called Metoclopramide (Emeprid/Vomend) and Ranitidine (Zantac).

Can you give the Vet a call again and seek further advice given that Marley has stopped eating again. This being especially important if he is not passing any faeces either.

Monday evening he suddenly just turned...he looked like he was having a stroke. He kept lying down then suddenly getting up to then flop down and repeat that process. When we got him to the vet his there was alot if movement in his gut. She gave him a pain killer and we brought him home. He went back in on Tuesday and stayed the day had metoclopramide, vetergesic, metacam and ranitidine. He was off his food and didn't poo. He came home Tuesday evening with recovery good we had to syringe feed him and metacam.
He is pooing now but they aren't normal poos...first they were odd shapes and a bit sticky but now smaller round ones. Hes drinking but still not eating much. He had a bit if grass yesterday but that's it. Hes gets annoyed with any attention I pay him!

Good to hear the vet has given a painkiller :thumb:

I use some organic baby food, in pouches, to help medicate rabbits. I put the meds (metacam or whatever) into a one ml syringe, and then put a bit of baby food in the end. It can fool them into thinking it's going to taste good.

My rabbits particularly like this one:

But any fruit or veg one is good :)

I tried this this afternoon he got fed up and ran off! I'm waiting for my partner to get home so we can try together! He took the metacam fine yesterday...today he's having none of it.

Did the Vet check Marley's teeth ? One possible primary cause of reduced gut motility is Dental problems.

With regards to the prokinetics, it is often necessary to continue giving them until input and output return to normal.

I know it's not a good time of the year, but could you cut some grass for him, if he'll eat that? Also sometimes they like strong-smelling herbs such as Coriander, Parsley, Dill and Basil.
