Cost of vaccinations

Hi all,

We are in the unfortunate position of having 6 of our rabbits due both the Combi/Myxi Jab and the Rhd 2.

Our vets seem to be one of the most expensive from what I've seen on here, charging around £30 for the Rhd2 and £50 odd for the Combi. Times this by 6 and its a lot of money

I'm interested in what others pay for these jabs, whether other vets practices offer discounts for multiple pets or the ability to pay in instalments, for example.

Should I just accept that these jabs are expensive or is my vet seriously inflating the price?

Thanks x

Mines £35 for RHD2 and £30 for the combo jab... £50 does seem a lot.. If you have a great vet and he'll look them all over too I may just go there anyway.. Otherwise I'd shop around a vets4pets may be cheaper? :) x

I think I paid something similar last time, only the cost of the RHD2 was the more expensive. My vet has given me a discount previously for 3+ rabbits, which I think was 10%.

I think you should certainly receive some sort of discount for yours if you take them all at once.

I'm pretty certain Anton vets used to give a discount for multi rabbits.
Have just looked on their website: Combination £37.91; RHD2 £38.51 (without any discount offered).

I would prefer to go to the vet who holds my rabbits records.

I agree with this, although as I only have Frosty now it’s less expensive. I seem to remember they were both around £35 ish ? Even back when I had 5 I never bothered shopping around.

I think it’s worth asking if they will give discounts for all your rabbits.

It is worth asking your vet if they will do a discount if you take them all in together. Our vet used to give discounts on Rabbit Tuesday. It is also worth ringing round to see what other vets in your area would charge for all 6.

I shop around. For multiple rabbits the cost can be prohibitive. My usual vet charges significantly more for RHD2 than another vet close by.

It's fine if you've just one rabbit, but I think for multiple rabbits it can be a sensible option to shop around unless you want to stick with your vet come hell or high water.

What you are paying is more than I have ever paid for my rabbits' vaccinations.

Someone on here was getting a good deal for vacs, I think it was Willow & Squiggles. I don't know if you both live nearby. I will look for the Thread.

when I did pay, it was £28 for the combi and I believe £30 for the rhd2. now I pay £7 a month (per rabbit) and get both free, along with other discounts.

honestly I don't see the issue shopping around. sometimes a vet is too expensive, or you can not reach them at that time. I've known plenty have a vet for having vaccines and another for actual checkups.. it works out fine.

Cost does seem to vary a lot as vets work out their pricing structures differently (e.g. one vet may charge more for vaccinations but less for a consult or drug dispensing fee). £50 is towards the higher end though, but £30 for the RHD2 is reasonable. £80 for the pair of jabs doesn't seem far off, especially for down south where property costs and salaries are higher.

I guess it's a free market and you are free to choose wherever you want to go, but personally I would advise sticking with the same vet for everything, whether it's the one you're currently with or one you're planning on going to for other stuff. The vaccination does include a full health check and whether you realise it or not, the vet will make notes on their file as to anything they have observed - even if not clinically significant at that time. So you could potentially end up with 2 sets of notes at 2 different practices and therefore without a full overview of everything to do with the animal in one place, which may become important at some time in the future.

So if you are happy with your vets and the level of care that they provide, I'd stick with it. I don't think it's a case of 'inflating the price' but maybe their pricing structure means that other things are cheaper, or maybe it means that they don't cut corners, or that they pay staff a reasonable wage, or have additional on-site facilities so they don't need to refer you on for things like lab tests or ultrasound...etc...etc...

I'm with Santa and Babsie xx

Me too :thumb: not a rabbit, but going to my usual vet meant that my bridge cat’s kidney disease was picked up before I’d even noticed he was ill, because he knew him and how much he weighed etc :thumb:

I’d rather my rabbit savvy vet did it and did the health check rather than one that happened to be cheaper.

Exactly :)

I was forced to find an 'additional' vet a few years ago when my 'normal' vet was unable to treat my seriously ill rabbit. So I have another vet 'on file' who knows my hoodlums anyway, which I think is a good thing. Especially, as you say, when you can't reach your own vet for whatever reason (eg their hours etc ..)

I think there's a difference between having another vet on hand for more complex needs such as referral or speciality work, and simply playing practices off against each other based on price.

I see a different vet with my cats specifically for acupuncture because my normal vet doesn't do acupuncture. If one of my rabbits needs specialist surgery, there's someone else who I go to. But it's always with the full knowledge and support of my usual vet and also with those other vets, and notes get sent from the second vets back to my usual vet, so they maintain a complete clinical record at my primary practice.

That is an entirely different thing from saying 'part of this is cheaper over here so I'm gonna do that over there, but I think you're better overall so I'm gonna stick with you for everything else'. It makes life unnecessarily complex, risks clinically relevant things being missed between the two vets, doesn't support the good vet on their overall pricing structure, and is just a bit rude, IMO.

My vets are not cheap but I get a good service while I'm there, although I'd have no issue shopping around since I have the vaccination cards if I had no other concerns, but I'm also happy to pay for the service and go somewhere I know since it's just two rabbits. I paid £80.10 for my two (so, £40.05 each) on Tuesday, combi and checkup with the rabbit-savvy vet. It does increase every year but not enough to concern me (i.e. I can assume it's just inflation etc.). DemiS also had a good deal at their vets but I can't for the life of me remember what it was! I recall the RHD2 being about £70 for both last year, so around the £35 mark.

I agree with this entirely :thumb:

I think I have been very lucky this year. I changed to this independent vet last year as they were the only one locally stocking filavac. I've paid £30 for the combo each and £25 for the filavac each. I am really happy with the care provided (they have been excellent with bob's stasis issues) but I don't think there is any thing wrong in asking different practices about basic costs so you make an informed choice - it may be for your area this is a fair price. Also I would try and negotiate a multi rabbit discount. Good luck x

Thank you for all your responses.

Ideally I'd like to stay where we are, and tbh I usually pay the amount without thinking too much about it, but having 6 due both has really bitten us on the bum.

We called a nearby practice yesterday and they charge around £20 less in total for both jabs and offer a forces discount of 10%. I'm not sure about a potential discount for multiples, but we are calling back tomorrow when their rabbit person is in.

I wouldn't want to have one vet for vaccines and another for other things, so if we like the sound of them we'll move the whole lot over. Those of you that do have separate vets for vaccines, how does this work? Is it not usual that just one vet would hold their records or is it a case of just getting them jabs but not being officially registered :? x
