Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Syringe feeding

Hey guys!,

My Marnie has to have antibiotics (Baytril) for her sneezing

And she HATES it lol!!

It’s okay when there’s two of us doing it... but Any tips on how I can do it alone for when my girlfriends at work?

Hi Ross

Have you seen these links?
(syringe feeding is the same as medicating, but more of it :))

I use a one ml syringe for just about everything, as I find it easier to manage :)

Thanks mate! The YouTube videos where a lot of help!

Although Marnie didn’t react as well as those rabbits and it still became quite the fiasco... and now she’s ignoring me lol

O well only 5 and a half days left of it  haha

I can't syringe feed Lopsy: he panics at the sight of the towel and the experienced vet nurse had a LOT of difficulty getting him into one for one of his jabs when he was playing up. He becomes all-legs and claws. BUT we have discovered that putting the Baytril on a fenugreek crunchie is acceptable for him :D He just thinks it's a lovely treat  We put it on and wait minimum 8hrs for it to soak in: the crunchies are dished so it doesn't flow off and soaks in nicely. He's not spat one out since :D if we're medicating him outside though, we have to make sure Aboleth gets something too which can be problematic!

You're welcome :)

Good luck for the rest of the time!

hey when you said minimum 8 hours.. what would the maximum be, if I was to soke several servings on a Friday morning, would they last for Saturday and sunday?

Ooh, I dunno! I expect they'll go too squishy to be handled! I've certainly done it for more than 12hrs before, but never more than about 14hrs, and the whole thing was a bit fragile by about 12hrs! I expect the medication might start to denature if it comes out of solution for too long as well (hopefully someone with more of a grasp of medicinal chemistry than my 16-years-ago A-level will be able to clarify).

ahh okay thanks :)
I'm going away for a couple of days so my mums looking after them, and I'm trying to make it easy for her, I think ill try mixing it in with some vegetable baby food, fingers crossed that works!

mashing up banana with the medicine mixed in seems to work! :)
Oh excellent, that's so much easier than trying to measure it on to a crunchie! Lopsy always gives any kind aof fruit a good sniff before scoffing it so always notices  Hope your Mum copes OK :)
