  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit not improving

Floppylop

Young Bun
My rabbit has had runny eyes on and off for a while now, always relatively controlled, initially I thought it was down to bedding etc, dust....but I notice now she has a slight white discharge in the eye, and also her nose is quite pink (she normally has quite a dark nose) she went to the vet a week ago and was given drops for conjunctivitus, but they dont seem to have done much for her...I am booked in for another appt on Saturday (earliest) and ideas suggestions as to what this could be etc, and any ideas what I could try to help her, she also has quite soft stools, again this as been on and off recently which I put down to her diet , despie being few changes..now beginning to think this could be connected to the eye issue??

There are many people on the forum who have problems with eyes. I am not experienced or knowledgeable about this. I hope they help you. You can also browse old topics for ideas.

Hi! Tell us what diagnostic has been made and what meds were given (and how much, for how long and how much the bun weights)?

I would go for skull x-ray, perhaps even dental and throught checkup once the bun is under sedation. And bacterial/fungal analysis of the discharge.

Sounds like she may have Dental problems. Runny eyes can occur if the tooth roots are elongated. Skull radiographs are needed to diagnose tooth root elongation. Problems with the crowns of the teeth may be a problem too so a full Dental evaluation would be needed. If Dental problems are present the Rabbit is unlikely to be eating enough hay which in turn will lead to soft poo and possibly episodes of gut stasis.

The nasolacrimal ducts may be blocked as a result of a chronic infection, so runny eyes will occur. The nasolacrimal ducts would need flushing.

Unfortunately I cant afford extensive vet treatment , and tho I was the insurance for details insurance I am still waiting for a quote, and this will now be classed as an ongoing treatment

The biggest problem is that I dont trust the vets, none of them are savvy , and any others I have already been to and left due to their utter incompetance, I just get the feeling I will either be fobbed off with more drops or, be pushed into massive tests unneeded, just dont trust them at all. but no option
