My specialist is giving a talk on gut statis- Any questions?

I think it'd be a great idea. But he may just not have the time to do it. If he did do it I think there should be a fee payable- ie he could not be expected to do it for nowt !

Poor chap, now he's got a load of mad Rabbit woman trying to bulldozer him into something

Haha, I better not say too much, Doughnut might not be as welcome as she normally is.

I think lots of vets call him, I'm surprised how he's got time to fit everyone in!

There is a question, if you get the chance - what is his view on gripe water and Infacol/simethicone? Vets have differing opinions on whether it's useful. I haven't met one who thinks it's harmful ... yet!

I don't think anyone's yet mentioned this on your thread here - apologies if so :)

No they haven't as it's on my personal list though. Doughnut is now on metaclop, zantac and infracol. When I rushed Doughnut in one time Mark wasn't there so I saw Allie who is also very good. I told her what medication I was giving Doughnut at that point and she said there had been a study on babies that infracol didn't actually work. So she's not convinced. I've always found it has as Doughnut used to make an awful sound when she ducked down which was gas and since I put her on it she doesn't.

Once Mark was in Doughnut went back to his care and he discharged her and I mentioned it but he said if it works for Doughnut to keep going with it. He said it's not harmful as I initially thought it's sweet and was it bad for her teeth/gut but it's not sugar and it dispenses in the body so you can give a lot of it.

Yes you've confirmed my experience of talking with vets about it. Basically more say that it isn't particularly helpful, but doesn't do any harm. I have had enormous success with it for what must be hundreds of stasis cases - lots resolved before they even get to the vet's appointment.

Marks view seems to be if it works for you then keep using it. I will ask him though and be interesting to see how much success the other owners in the room have had with it. I think when I took her up the hospital as Trinity was closed they said at least you are getting fluids into her anyway even if it didn't work. They were much of the mind we'll get her through the night then back to mark as he knows better than anyone as he advises them too! When I went to my local vets there was a locum there, it was just for her injections and he had trained under Mark and said he wouldn't trust any other vet with his animals. It seems wherever I go it all leads back to him

Ooo this sounds very interesting! Unfortunately i'm in the wrong part of the country so can't attend but would love to hear the feedback! The infacol questions sound interesting. I'm not hugely convinced it works for babies, for some it seems to but for others it doesn't, but it would be good to know if it's recommended for rabbits with potential stasis and if there are any stats on it's reliability. I might get some to keep in my bunny first aid drawer just incase Winston decides to have another bout of stasis!

I would be really interested to know what the causes of unexplained stasis might be. Winston's bout was unexplained and I think the control freak in me isn't very happy about that :( I would love to know what caused it so I can reduce the risk of it happening again!

Have you got a link to this talk at all or is it by personal invitation only ?
Thanks
Nikki

It's on Trinity's facebook page. Mark is talking at his clinic so not sure how much room there is but I'm thinking a lot more may come than they expected :) I think everyone is welcome, don't think it's just customers.

Yes let's see if he knows what unexplained could be. Probably quite a long list :)

These are really good questions - and in the case of the SQ fluids in cases of mild GI tract - I know they do do it, as I have wtwo buns have it now and they were not badly in stasis - if at all - just showing signs/have a paranoid mummy - and it definitely perked them up no end. Would be interesting though to get Marks thoughts about it.

I'm sure that between CPayne and I - and any other RU'ers going - we can ask any questions you have - the answers will benefit all of us on RU and those people attending.

Very excited about this now - I hate Stasis with a passion - it's just awful for the buns and I feel so helpless when they have it - having more knowledge will be such a big help.
Yes they do use I V, I was told it's to get as much fluid in as quick as possible. I think they also syringe fluid. I know when I was syringing doughnut when she was really ill it was just dripping out she wasn't swallowing. They may have had more luck but I know they've always said after iv she's perked up
