Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Liver Decline - Milk Thistle Advice

I have an elderly Rex rabbit who is almost 12 years old and last she started to show signs of kidney and liver problems. Thankfully her kidneys are stabilised but the liver results have declined. Last year in July some time, I started to give her dry milk thistle, but by around September it was getting harder to buy as it seemed sold out on most U.K. based websites.

I’ve decided to try out liquid milk thistle, BUT the only place I can find selling it labelled “for rabbits” is in America and it’s very costly. Would it be safe to give her liquid milk thistle that’s labelled for dogs and cats, as those seem to be in abundance on U.K. based shops online?

Thanks for reading the long and drawn out message and if anyone can help, thanks!

My vets provide Milk Thistle for my rabbit in liquid form. I think it’s tablets made into a suspension. Hopefully your vet could do the same? Then they can also advise on dosage. Hope it helps Poppy 🐰

I think some of the dog ones have meat flavour in them. The most important thing will be to get one that is alcohol-free. You can usually get tinctures for humans with glycerine rather than alcohol. Dosage-wise, you'd obviously need to run it by the vet.

My “rabbit savvy” Vet left last year and a new “in training” Vet took over. She directed me to a website on Google in America. I didn’t feel comfortable with the advice, as when I asked about dosage by weight she said “I think it tells you on the label twice daily”. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the link. The Vet didn’t seem up on the dosage. May have to find another Rabbit Savvy Vet in my location, as I want my Poppy to live as comfortable and long life as possible.
