Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Jaw problems. UD, possible tapeworm cyst in bone.

Young Bun
hi everyone :)
First of all I would like to say, please please please do not be rude or mean to me about this. I have multiple mental illnesses and a chronic illness which has resulted in my mum having to look after my rabbits for a short period of time. I am very grateful for her being able to help me and me not having to resort to rehoming my babies, but she is not rabbit-savvy and I simply was not in a place to care for them at that time. I haven't abused, neglected or hurt my pets. Anything that I could have prevented, I already know, and I feel ridiculously guilty already, please do not make me feel worse.

ANYWAY, onto topic...
I took tinkerbelle in for a check-up today as, as some people know, her companion Smudge passed away a few days ago. While she was there (To see Simon at the cat and rabbit clinic in Northampton, which I have seen recommended here i think?) he found a big problem in her jaw. Her teeth are quite bad/misaligned, and she has a lot of bone deformation and destruction on her right lower jaw. He said it *could* be an abscess but it's unlike one he has ever seen before (he sees 10-15 rabbits a DAY) and honestly he isnt actually sure what's wrong with her :( He also said it could be a tapeworm cyst or something different entirely. He said the reason its different is the solid parts of it are VERY solid and the pus or liquid is very liquid, if that makes sense? He also said that abscesses normally can stretch or deform the jaw bone but this one seems to have almost shattered it or exploded...
Btw im still fuzzy on things he said so if anyone understands any of this and could explain it would be much appreciated.

She is a healthy weight, eating fine, acting normally, and she ISNT in any major/noticeable pain or anything like that. She is making a strange clicky/crunching noise when she eats very hard foods though.

She is being kept in overnight to get x-rays, a needle inserted to check if it is an abscess i think?, to get her teeth all sorted and straight and stuff, and generally for them to try and figure out whats wrong. He also said they might have to give her an MRI scan if the x-rays arent clear enough.

Warm wishes and any advice is gladly accepted as I'm pretty much totally clueless as to what is going on.

Also I know it shouldnt even be a thought, but she isnt insured as she is over 5 years old, and i've only had her a few months so the companies i had looked into already didnt insure over age 5, and i havent really had too long to look into it really... But yeah i'm guessing this is going to be crazy expensive...? Anyone have any clue on the prices im looking at? He said for these x-rays, surgery, tests and medication just for tomorrows treatments will be around £350... I have no clue if that is a good or bad price if i'm honest. How much is the most you guys have had to pay for abscess treatment, extensive surgeries etc? Just so I can prepare myself, since I'm only 15 and I will be paying nearly, if not all of this.

Thankyou for reading <3

Hello, Amy :)

Not got any particular advice as thankfully Alfrid has never had these sort of problems (touch wood), but I just wanted to send some vibes for your little girlie :) Any I also wanted to say that I am the same age as you (well, nearly 16) and I can totally understand the worries of paying for treatment. Rabbits are rather expensive creatures to say they are so dinky! Although that's why they're so expensive - they're complicated blighters  I'd generally prepare for it being super expensive, as I have found in the past (although we have insurance!) and that way you will be pleasantly surprised when it works out cheaper

It sounds like little Tinkerbelle is in the best place possible. There was a thread on here a little while back about a bunny who had a tapeworm cyst in her jaw - it might be worth using the search function just to see if that throws up anything interesting?

I hope Simon can find out what is wrong with her and help her soon x

Thankyou for the warm wishes <3 I've had a look using the search bar but nothing seemed that similar :( But i'll keep looking anyway :) I dont mind a bit paying the money for my sweetheart, but its more convincing my family that a rabbit is "worth" hundreds and hundreds in vet bills :/

This was the thread I meant - bunnymadhouse's lovely Esmee: http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?434351-Esmee-and-her-abcess-that-wasnt-an-Abcess&highlight=esmee+tapeworm+cyst although it might not be much use to you at the moment!

Thankfully my parents accept that I'll pay anything within reason for Alfrid (and insurance covers the rest) but other family members aren't so easily convinced  I get the 'he'll go well in a stew' comments from the older generation which is slightly amusing considering that my grandparents' dog killed my first rabbit! Ah, well. I know what Alfrid means to me and that is all that matters :) we'd be a lot worse off if it wasn't for insurance however, as Alfrid seems destined to be a sickly bunny - he was runt of the litter and it seems like we can't go three months without a vet visit somewhere!

Yes i did see that one :) Thankyou though <3 ahh you're very lucky hehe, i wish him well though, poor bun <3
Tinkerbelle, as well as all of my pets are regularly de-wormed so i'm not really sure HOW it could be tapeworm if i'm honest... unless she had it before i got her, honestly i have no clue how long these sort of things can go un-noticed for... She had a full check up when i got her around 5 months ago and was fine though... its crazy how it got so bad so fast, and without me or anyone being able to notice anywthing :(

So the vets have just rang as tinkerbelles surgery has just been finished, but i cant pick her up for another 2 hours :(
Simon said it isnt an abscess, he is now pretty sure it's a tapeworm cyst but it's actually in the bone and not the muscle, so they cant remove it because the cant remove her jaw bone obviously...
He has sent an email to some people at bristol zoo (??) about it, asking a specialist for their advice on what to do next. Overall we still haven't really got any solutions or answers as of yet :(
Simon has dealt with quite a few tapeworm cysts, despite how uncommon they are so its worrying that even he doesnt know what to do..

Sending vibes for Tinkerbelle. Hope you manage to get to the bottom of it, sounds like you have a good vet on the case. I sympathise with the concerns about the cost - my Fred was too old to be insured by the time I decided it was a good idea and he's just had surgery for abscesses. So far it has come to about £700 and we've a long way to go yet. I save a bit each month as 'Fred insurance' but I think it will easily be wiped out by this!

Thankyou 💕 not sure if I said earlier in the thread but she is also too old to be insured I think :( she's doing ok today I think, still grumpy from the vets visit, which is understandable hehe xx
