  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

E cuniculi - 10.5 year old lady

If she seems happy enough, is eating well, maintaining her weight, weeing and pooing, doesn't seem stressed by it all - she's coping. The medication may take a few weeks to have any real effect. I used to keep a diary of symptoms & severity, so I could compare it week by week. It was really useful to keep me going when I had rabbits with really bad cases of EC. One rabbit took about 6 months before she was back on her feet and fully mobile again, but she was gradually improving week on week (most weeks, anyway). Anyone who didn't know would not have been able to tell how bad she had been (head fixed round to her shoulder, unable to stand, being hand fed for months). It is a roller coaster ride, so there will be some downs as well as a gradual improvement.

Bunnies will be more disoriented after they are handled. I also limited space and used rolled towels/blankets for support. Your bunny may get worse for a couple days before antibiotics start working. Sending more vibes.
