Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. berties huge chin abscess...

:( cant believe i didnt see it there yesterday and it was small during the morning..wed had a heck of a morning getting nikki up and bandit downstairs for bt to put in new lines..and they never showed..i wasnt on the system!:censored:
i had to grovel virgin to stay with them..whilst on the phone the buns treats came that nikki ordered them from hay experts...taster packs..wood rattles...oxbow pineapple and papain pills
we saw berties chin...omg it was orrible orrible...swollen white pink red and with a black lumpymass..eww oh noo i thought dead skin....PANIC!
well they couldnt fit him in try emergency hopsital they said..they were booked too so they had to fit us in at our branch even thi at first id agreed to wait till tomorrow and id bathe it etc. but bertie seemd to lay on his side peering at me like he was dying..i was sickened and petrified..
petra was very good she was exhausted it was 6.20pm being aheavily pregnant vet cant be easy! she took great care of him and pulled off the black scab and a huge chunk of pus came with it....i felt sick and as it was on his chin and immediate thoughts were jaw and teth. petra said it feels detached from his jaw and his teeth seem fine BUT if he gets worse or doesnt get better hell have to go in for xrays etc and poss excision of the area.
she reckoned it had been there for about 48hrs..i felt soo bad for missing it..hes a house bun how the hell did we miss it:oops: she said wed got it very early....it could have waited till morning and probably would have popped...i said id have panicked even more finding pus and blood and scab!
petras given him a rimadyl jab and a baytril jab..hes got oral baytril too and he has to go back friday.
bathing a frenchies chin post abscess pop is bloomin hard but with boiled warm water with salt and cotton wool twice a day..is hard but necessary.

never seen bunny pus like it..it was whitish with consistemcy of clotted cream/philadelphia cheese/:shock:

ive bathed it once and he was whimpering almost..he was making odd stressed noises bless him and fought us both like a demon.

i know i shouldnt panic but if youd seen him layig there as though he were dying and bif panicking nuding him..wshing him etc i realised after losing oscar if she lost bertie wed have lost her n bertie close together....it brought back very painful memories:cry:

is there anything else you folks can think of that you found useful when your bun had one please tell!!

I do hope Bertie has some pain relief aswell as the Baytril :?

TBH If the abscess is still producing pus then I would ask the Vet to take a swab from the abscess wall, *not* just the pus, Bunny pus is often sterile, to identify the exact bacteria involved. Baytril may not be the best abx for an abscess on the chin.

I hope Bertie recovers well and it does not turn out to be tooth root related

Oh dear :( I don't have advice, but I hope he feels better soon and you don't get too scratched to bits when trying to bathe his chin!

Speak to your vet again about the treatment. I lost my boy Bugsy to an abscess. I had campaigned to get penicillen jabs for him (not licensed for use in rabbits) but it was too late. However they kept it in stock and when a freind of mine had a bun with an abscess the following week, the penicillen did the trcik. You really need to see if there is anything stronger your bun should be having... I don't find Baytril cuts it, with abscesses. Lots of vibes xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

 thank you for the advice folks.

jane thank you..yes petra gave hm a rimadyl shot to help him with the pain.
he is going back on friday and i think its her hub im seeing..hes an exotic specialist vet he was the one who did the second opinion n bif when other vets said she had cancer of the cervx and to ave her pts when her appetite fizzled out totally! shes happy here today and htat was back n jan!
Bertie picked up last night bless him..ate drank ate hay.pooed for britain and had a run aorund well as much as bertie ever does lol.
He was hell to bathe..and im waiting for my daughter to try and get some stength up to bathe it whilst i get kicked and scratched to death:shock:

hes a good ole soul and so well loved..if anything goes wrong now i dont know what we wil do and i know as petra said bif won survive losing him now.

friday i guess thats what will ocur swabs xrays of teeth roots she said...and possible excision of the site.

well i guess rimadylis first line..he only has enough til friday so i guess she wants to see how he goes as it wasnt the worst one ever but as she said theyre a big problme with bunies and they reoccur so often and sometimes are the demise of buns as it gets into the bones etc..esp legs which get amputated and jaws which end up being futile treated. she said i can tell ou straight i know you well enough bu tother folks think ah well its an abscess itll go right?
even so i know i can ask petra about diff antibiotics and she wil see wha tests needed and which one..she was so good with biover all those tests for her cancer that wasnt"

im upset and mad at him as in th elounge we have non slip lino like htey use in schools etc and hes laying with his sore patch on the floor...mind you i guess his chin would be sticking to his fleece bed its not a good one..one from lidl..like a rug!
hes eaten drank pooped wandered around etc

i hear so many folks say its caused by pasturela virus is that so? petra thinks his was a result of a lovers tiff again...or chinning something sharp or too hard. lets hope so.
least his pain sht is 48hr lasting one..if hes worse ill rush him in again .
