  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Male rabbit not eating

recital

New Kit
He hasn't been himself since we took his girlfriend away from him, but needs must as she had babies (we had thought them both female). He has become very quiet and seems to be eating very little today or yesterday, if anything at all. Is this just that he is pining for his partner or is something else going on? We haven't changed his food and have been trying to tempt him with his favourite veggies, but he just isnt interested. He will need to go to the vet tomorrow if I can't get him to eat, but in the meantime, any suggestions, would be great. Many thanks

Whats his posture like? Is he grinding his teeth at all?

Is his tummy distended in anyway?

Has he poo'd ? If not then I think he needs to be seen by a Vet today as if he has stopped pooing it means his guts have stopped working.
If he is pooing then is he getting enough human attention as he is now on his own? He may be feeling depressed and lonely.
If he can still smell the Doe he may also be feeling quite frustrated.
I would try to tempt him to eat with some tastey Veg, gratted carrot is often popular or finely chopped dark greens.
Dandelion leaves are good for getting Buns to eat too.

Again, it is important that he is still pooing and if he's not then it is necessary to get him seen by a Vet today.
I hope he feels better/happier soon

He must eat today or see a vet I think. Make him run about a bit and that might make him poo and his guts could get going again and he might eat some dandelions or something tempting - When Benny was like this one morning I put him the other end of the patio and he was so desperate to get back home he ran all the way to his hutch - then looked better and did some poops by lunch time. I wouldn't leave it longer than a day when they are like this though as it's very difficult for them to recover if left too long.

He has had some food now, but not a great deal. Plenty of poo and wee, so all working that end. I think he is just huffing to be honest and missing his girlfriend. Thank you for all the replies.
