Checklist!

OK before I go off to the RSPCA centre I was wondering if you guys could comment on my checklist. This list is based on 2 rabbits sharing.

* 48" dog crate for in side use, I am gonna add a mezzanine floor to this.

*Hutch 6' x 2' x 2' for out doors attached too

*Run 6' x 4' ( was wondering wether this should be on path grass or a mix of both)

* Corner litter tray

*Medow hay for bedding

*Timothy Hay for eating.

*Herb garden (not needed but I love gardening so could not resist)

*Cardboard boxes

*Vet bed sheet.

*Willow Balls

I am gonna see about food etc when I find out what they are eating now. I was also wondering if the run is to be on the grass is it a good idea to put chicken wire over the grass to avoid digging or will this hurt their feet??

So what am I missing??

I would advise more litter trays - and megazorb for litter - I use underbed storage boxes from wilkinsons as they are nice and big and the rabbits don't pee over the side or kick the poops out as much - and they can lie in the box too - Mine seem to like one for a bed and one for a toilet, each - although the group of 4 have 2 bases from guinea pig cages measuring about 2'x18" as their litter trays as they like to pile in together and eat hay :D

OMG! I missed water bottle! Hope fully I would have remembered before bringing the rabbits here cos the rat ones would be far too small!

I am also adding brush and nail clippers to the list cos I used these all the time on our old rabbit.

I use a dish for water - those brown 'rabbit' dishes sold for food - they drink more that way - the girls in the shed have a huge one with 'dog' written on the side - good job they can't read  I put their pellets on the floor as it stops fighting over a dish, but I've also used the plastic base that goes under a big plant pot - only about 60p - as it's bigger than a dish when you have more than one rabbit eating - but they used to fling it about and the food would go all over the shed, so now I just tip it up and they eat off the floor.

Awww, you sound so excited :D

That looks like a good list :) Are you planning on having the inside much? If it's just for visits you don't really need a dog crate - though they can be handy now and then and do fold up.

Another thing you might want to think about is storage. Some people use bins or storage crates for the hay and pellets to keep them contained. A bag of hay does tend to get messy!

The other thing is a good vet! If you don't have one already I'd interview a few local ones about their bunny knowledge. It's always better to have one ready rather than phoning around in a panic in an emergency.

Ask whether the rabbits have access to grass already. If not you might want to start off with the run on concrete so they don't suddenly eat lots and you can move it later. If you don't move the run around the garden, you'll probably find grass doesn't grow very well in the run as it's a small area to cope with bunny chewing. As you're green fingered growing grass in pots could work :) You can buy seed for Timothy grass.

I am excited!!:D

I am planning to use a bowl indoors and a bottle outdoors, but we will see what the rabbit agenda is.

I am planning on having them inside quite a bit so I think a crate would be a good idea.

I am lucky on the vet front because my ratty vet is a small animal specialist and knows tons about rabbits:D

Thanks for the grass advice:D

What about the chicken wire??? will it hurt their feet, I am lucky enough to have clay soil so it willsink in a little in no time and I would pin down all the edges so they are safe?

It depends on the bunnies. Most chunky breeds have been fluffy paws but you need to watch out for rabbits with thin fur on their paws like rexes. You can lift the turf and put the mesh under then returf if you're worried :)
