Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

dark brown pee-serious?

I have recently noticed in the litter tray that the pee both my rabbits produce is dark brown/reddish in appearance. Is this serious and worth checking out. Diet wise they both have access to water, hay and pellets and we give them some veg morning and evening. Could the colour be due to carrots? We are trying not to give too much as I read on two separate websites that too much carrot is not good for them.

Have they eaten dandelion or hazel leaves? They can colour the urine, too. Not sure about carrots, especially when you feed them very little only. Does it smell any different than normal?

dark pee

Thanks for the quick response. No we haven't fed them anything different. It seems to smell okay. It must be diet related though as they both are producing it. Would it be safe to detox them both and cut out veggies for a day to see if it changes?

Bunny wee varies a lot in colour due to their food, so don't worry - mine are eating a lot of plantain and herbs at the moment as their hay is full of it, and their wee is brown.
