  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny appears not to be eating.

I brought my bunny home on Sunday but i have noticed he doesnt seem to be eating. I am giving him the same food as the place where i bought him from. I have been stroking him a lot. Do you think he might be stressed and should i stop stroking him for a couple of days. I am getting really worried.

Is He Eating Anything At All??
Is He Drinking??
Is He Pooing And Weeing??

If The Answer Is No Then He Needs A Vet .
Buns Go Downhill Realy Fast Without Food.

However If He Is Eating A Little And Pooing And Weeing Normaly Then I Would Leave Him Alone For A Day Or Too As It May Just Be That Everything Is Just Too Much For Him .

Hope Hes Ok

I agree with other posters, if he is not eating or pooing, he needs a vet ASAP!

Digestive upsets are very common in rabbits that have just come from a pet shop, left untreated they are fatal. It's not the stroking, it's the stress of a change in environment.

hes fine now!! we took him to the vets and he gave charly 3 injections , and as soon as he got home , he was munching like there was no tomorow!! really happy hes ok again, the vet sauid he was a little bit bloated!!

Glad that he is ok now. You were really lucky, bloat can so easily kill little bunnies.

Make sure he has plenty of hay and fresh water. What are you feeding him?

My daughter answered you. He is not actually better i think its wishfull thinking. He does seem to be improving a little nut still no pooh. My vet has advised me to give him vegetable oil to get things moving. We are feeding him hay mostly but anything he will eat.!

My vet has advised me to give him vegetable oil to get things moving.
Thats a first, haven't heard that before.

Presume you've treid tempting him with really strong smelling fresh herbs like basil ,coriander etc.

Hope he gets better soon. Have you got to go back to the Vets? When mine have similar probelms,it's taken more than 1 visit to get them right

That's very strange advice coming from a vet, but I have heard so many 'bad vet' stories in my 2yrs on this forum I can only say they are more common than good ones, which is why I've been trying to find out what tablets he gave you. The link I gave you yesterday has a 'vet questionairre' on it - Finding a vet that has done more than the normal 3 weeks on rabbit medicine which they do at vet college is vital for your rabbit's health. The fact he gave you pills and showed you how to pop them into the rabbit's mouth would make me think he's more used to treating cats :?

The tablets he gave me were Marbocyl half of one a day plus he had the injection and also Protexin Bio-lapis one a day and he also gave him buscopan and Dexafort injection. I phoned again this morning and spoke to another vet who also told me to give vegetable oil. Please dont tell me this is wrong because i have given him 1 dose yesterday and 2 today.

I checked the website and beleive it or not the forst vet was the one i go to. I phoned the one in my area that specialises in small animals and they wanted £50 for mixy jab. I took my dog to him a few years back when he slipped a disc and they gave him one painkilling injection and said if he was no better the next day i would have to put him down. He showed me once how to squeeze the urine out which i didnt understand and when i asked if they could keep him for them to do (i was willing to pay) they said as it was a sunday they didnt have the time or staff!!!! So unfortunately i have no faith in them

I can't really see the point in looking at a Royal College of Vetinary Surgeons website can you? All qualified vets will list themselves there, and of course if they say they are expert at everything they'll get more customers - it's just a big advertising website for free publicity for anyone qualified.

The best way to find a good vet is to put a post in rabbit chat asking if there's a good rabbit vet in your area - personal recommendations are the only thing you can trust :)

Yes i agree. I phoned a friend of mine who also has a rabbit she uses the same vet as me and has found them really good. Fingers crossed that i will be able to pos6t a thread saying that Charly is right as rain.
