Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poor Rosie has Sore Hocks

FurryBeasties

Young Bun
My rex rabbit Rosie (too many R's there) has recently developed sore hock. It was looking quite sore just over a week ago when we first found it with broken skin but not really any blood but as she was going in for a risky spay it was felt it would be best to leave it. Anyway she's recovered nicely from her spay and when we took her in to get her stiches removed (not neccesary as she'd done the job herself - clever girl) i brought it up with the vet. Her feet had improved a lot since we first noticed them, now there bald patches that are still pink and a bit scabby but much better. The vet suspected that the baytrill she'd been on after her op helped clear it up a bit so put her down for another 2 weeks of it to finish it off.

From my understanding of sore hock it isn't an infection as such (though is can get infcted) or a bacteria problem so i'm not sure how the baytril will help. I also confined her movement a lot durin the last week after he op and i suspect that helped more. Is it worth keeping her on the baytril to be safe or do you think it's pointless?

Also are there any hints on helping get rid of this problem. There currently kept on hemp covered by a thin layer of straw in there hutch and the run is on concrete slabs. We've half thought of getting come of those rubber horse mats to line the run but it's early days yet and we're not sure where to get them from.

Any advice would be much appreciated

hey, one of my buns had sore hocks, i got some cream from the vet (can't remember what its called sorry - will look when i get home) i think it was straw, i changed from shavings and hay in the litter pit (indoor buns) to shavings and straw - think it was a bit rough for her. changed back and it cleared up - she's a sensitive bun ! she occasionaly gets small bouts but think thats because she stamps a lot
