Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fleas...

My rabbit has what looks like fleas, but they are only on his nose and around his eyes. I've tried to remove them myself with tweezers but there are too many of them. I also bought some Ultra Care Flea and Tick Spray, but this can only be sprayed on his body and not his face, so it's not really getting to the problem. I'm not sure what to do...Have any of you had experience with this? What treatment would you recommend?

Hello

Are you sure its fleas :? It doesn't sound like it to me :?

You can get a 'spot-on' flea treatment from your Vets. This is applied at the back of Buns neck and is absorbed through the skin. It treats the whole Rabbit.

But I would really advise you to get a Vet to confirm what you are treating first. Also, if your Bun is not vaccinated against Myxomatosis I would advise you to get this done ASAP. Myxo is spread by biting insects (eg fleas) and there appears to be a serious Myxomatosis outbreak at the moment.

Welcome to RU :)

Are you sure theyre not ticks? Ticks look like white round warts & they like to burrow round the eyes, whereas fleas inhabit the whole body but are easier to see round the tail & the head/neck area. If they are ticks then dont pull them off cos if you do part of them will remain in the rabbits body & may cause infection

I'm pretty sure they're fleas; they're dark brown/blackish and jump around... I asked the vet and they recommended Advantage for cats, since it's safe for rabbits too. Thanks for the advice, though. Hopefully this will work :)

Actual rabbit fleas do tend to congregate around the ears/head. They're less common and less mobile than cat fleas (which rabbits get too). Good news is the same stuff kills them.

You might find a cat flea comb will also help remove them. Once they're on the comb dip it in soapy water to kill/remove them so they don't jump back on.
