  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

another EC question - head tilt?

2 years ago Betty was pts as she had head tilt and was quite ill. EC was mentioned as a possibility but as we only had Gus at the time, we gave him a course of panacur and then we never really thought of EC since.

as you probably know, i think its possible that Frida might have EC and she has been having bouts of GI Stasis. I have now noticed that her head looks very slightly tilted - its as though she's got a permanently quizzical expression.

its not really obvious except to me, i suppose because i see them so much. however, gail has noticed it too - probably for the same reasons.

can head tilt start so subtly? with Betty i came home once day to find her almost twisted double and this is so different.

thanks

sarah.

I guess as the damage is done by a protozoa, it all depends which part of the body it 'swims' to - and a course of panacur would stop it in its tracks, so damage to that part of the body would only be partial, so I would imagine it can be a very variable thing depending on when it was treated and how far advanced it was beforehand.

I don't have anything to back this up, but my view would be that yes it can. I think since head tilt has always been the most obvious symptom of EC, possibly some people have traditionally missed it in the early stages (eg before much was known about EC - not that much is known now!) and then suddenly seen a dramatic tilt. Also, my feeling is that EC affects different bunnies in different ways, different strains of it etc too.

well we are starting the panacur today so hopefully if this is something related to EC, that will help

it really is so slight that its not obvious so i hope thats a sign its not gone far :)
