Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Post neuter - any advice?

Hey all,

I have my two boys, Jamie and Kitt, neutered tomorrow and I was just wondering what kind of precautions I need to take? They're currently living indoors in pens which are next to each other (owing to their randy antics I couldn't have them living together until after the op).

Is there any special requirements they need to have when they return back from the vets? How long should I expect them to be out of character for? I'm aware about watching out for poops and things, as the vet discussed that with me last week.

Please advise,

L x

The vet should give painkiller and gut stimulant before they come home. Some give antibiotics as well - Squidgy was on a 10 day course after his neuter.
Bobby bounced back no problme, but Squidgy was more problematic. We shut him ain a small space inside on soft blankets with a hot water bottle, a water bowl and his food in a bowl. Don't put them on hay/ shavings etc as these can stick to the wound and be uncomfortable.
A sotck of dandelion leaves and favourite herbs is probably a good idea! Squidgy would only eat grass and fresh veg, no pellets or hay, for abut 4 days. And he didn't poop for ages, so I had to return to the vet for more gut stimulant.
You may want some probiotic in the water and sopme recovery food in, just in case you have to syringe feed.
