Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Snuffly buns and vaccines

BB Mommy

Two of my buns are due their myxi jabs tomorrow.
One of them is prone to snuffles, and his last case was quite severe.
Any stress seems to induce it, so even the trip to the vets is likely to trigger symptons.
Does anyone have a bun that suffers from the snuffles, but has had its myxi or VHD jab without an adverse reaction?

I'm feeling nervous about taking him tomorrow and feel like cancelling the appointment :(
Any advice of similar buns would be appreciated!
Thanks

My Vet says that as long as Bun with a history of Snuffles is asymptomatic its OK to vaccinate.
However, in some cases the Immune Response the vaccine triggers can mean that the Snuffles symptoms return as the immune system is diverted from keeping the Snuffles at bay to react to the vaccine.

Bobbie had life-threateningly serious Snuffles. She eventually recovered and was vaccinated against Myxi 2 weeks ago. She had no recurrence of her Snuffles symptoms.
However one of her Boblets, Little Bill, developed Snuffles symptoms 48 hours after vaccination against Myxi.
If your Vet feels your Bun is clinically well (ie no symptoms) I would go ahead with the vaccination. I'd have the Myxi done first and then leave it a month before the VHD is done. Two weeks is usually enough but with an immuno-compromised Bun my Vet thinks leaving 4 weeks between vaccinations is better

Phew, sorry for the epic post!!

Funnily enough, Santa seems to have longer between snuffly bouts whenever she has her vaccinations. It's almost as if the vaccine sets her immune system working and while it's at it, it has a good old go at the snuffles as well :?

We currently have a fresh set of skull x-rays in at a specialist radiologist to see if we can work out any correlation or otherwise between her teeth, skull and snuffles. I'll keep you posted on the results...

Thanks guys. I've been pondering over this all morning but am happier to take them now.:D
I will ask for Joeys VHD to be delayed for a month tho' Jane - that seems like good sense to me.
