  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My bunny Zelda (some of you know her) has got really bad dandruff, and big flakes/chunks of fur/skin have been comming out. i described the symtoms to my friend's vet and she said Zelda probbaly has "walking dandruff" and i looked it up, and it fits perfectly to what Zelda has.
I am going to make a vets appointment on monday, and hopefully i shall take her that day.
I was wondering if anyone knew what i should do in the meantime, or if it is contageous to humans??
It said on the internet that it is contageous to us if a cat or dog was the host, but it didn't say about rabbits being contageous.

I've had a few cases of mites just recently with rescue/foster buns, they do bite humans but dont seem to live on us. I limit handling, but wear an apron that can be taken off and washed after handling the bun. I use a lot less bedding so I can throw the whole lot away daily as they live in the bedding too. Your vet will probably give an Ivermectin jab (a course of 3 usually) but this takes a couple of days to start killing off the little critters. After a couple of days I totally empty the hutch and spray it with a hutch spray specifically for mites and fleas (from a pet shop), alow to dry/air thoroughly before putting fresh bedding and bun back. :)

Oh, if you have more than one bunny, that live together, the other/s have more than likely got them too, so they should all go to the vet.
