Hey All,

My little bunny just went into be neutered this morning, I managed to hold back the tears until the car! Can anyone give advise on after care? I have his indoor cage ready and some vet bed I bought last week. I sent him in some food to the vets.
Is there anything else I need to do or be aware of, and help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Bex

Awww i will send vibes for him. Just a couple of days cage rest should be fine, Males tend to recover very quickly from being neutered, i have had males come home after and you would never know there had been anything done xx

He may be a little drowsy and out of it when he gets home. Offer him some of his favourite greens and pellets when he gets in and some buns find it easier to drink from a bowl when recovering from an op. Keep him warm and quiet and in his cage for the next 48 hours.

Make sure he dosnt attack his stitches and check the wound a couple of times a day.... (some swelling is normal in the first 2 days but should start to subside by day 3).

Above all make sure he starts eating within a few hours and check that he is toiletting too. :D

Shredded newspaper should be used for bedding, or something soft like a towel, as stuff like sawdust will get stuck in his wound.

When benji was neutered, his ears were cold, as all of the blood was flowing to him wound, so some snugglesafe might also be a good idea...

They tend to just sleep it off... :D sending vibes

I know how scared you must feel, I had my boy neutered just a couple of weeks ago too! The nurse told me to keep him off hay when I picked him up as it can irritate the wound, so I restricted his hay to a big pile in just one corner of the cage for about a day, after which he had distributed it around the cage anyway  so I figured it wasn't bothering him too much. He was not too keen on a lot of pellets for a couple of days, but was always munching on the hay and little hay roll treats that he likes :) He also had a towel to lie on, which I also wrapped him in as he was quite cold for about 12 or so hours afterwards. He would get tired of me fussing every so often and shrug the towel off  I also gave water in a bowl for a couple of days incase it would have hurt him to reach up for a bottle, but within 4 hours of getting him home he had already liberated himself from the cage and run under the table as I was sorting out his towel for him  He was going crazy after 2 days of confinement to the cage ;) He also slept quite a bit for a day or two, which I worried about even though I knew he would  I'm sending healing vibes  :)

You could offer a hay rack instead, its more hygenic and keeps it away from war wounds  for a while anyway

lol, yes I thought that too, but he tends to ignore hay in a rack, I don't know why  I just made sure I changed the hay very regularly instead :) I don't think I left him without supervision for over 24 hours so there wasn't much to do

Hey,

He is home now and all well, eating drinking, although not as much drinking as normal. Pooing but no wee yet. Do you think I should be worrying about no wee yet?

As long as he is drinking bits of water, he should wee soon.

It'll pooing you have to be more worried about in the first 24 hours, so keep him eating.

Mine always liked herbs to nibble post-op

Yup he has that naturals stuff and has eaten all of what i have given him, have left him pellets too but not sure if he has eaten those. He is pooing fine. Just no wee yet. He has drunk as watched him drinking yesterday, but normally he has had about 1/6th of his bottle by the next morning and no where near that has gone. So was just a little concerned.

Thats excellent news :D Bunny owners are so easily pleased aren't they?! I was really happy when Bailey pooed and weed after his neutering too

I took Otus to the vet yesterday and the nurse said he wasn't healing :'(
One has filled with blood and she thinks it has clotted, and she told me to keep an eye on it and see if it goes down. That's easier said than done, because he won't let me look. When I pick him up he scampers up to my shoulder and nuzzles into my neck. I do not know how to safely hold him without hurting him so I can look.

Can anyone give advice on how best to hold him so I can see if the swelling is going down?
The nurse had no trouble at all but I just don't want to hurt him.

When I check Bailey I hold his bum/back feet on my left hand and hold him under the front feet with my right hand so he is sitting up, facing away from me. I can then use the thumb and first finger of my left hand to part the fur and see the wound, tipping him backwards just a little so i can see. The shaved patch of fur makes it easier to see :D Just be careful not to touch the area, I checked Bailey the other day and accidently touched one poor deflated sac and he did not like it at all! Must have thought I was being a little too personal  When he was first done I was also really scared of hurting him, so I would hold him and my boyfriend would part the fur and have a look, or I would hold him in front of a mirror and have a look myself
Also, don't be too worried if you find a scab on the back of his neck. This is likely to be from an antibiotic injection they give them (baytril). Poor Bailey had a really big one :( I would have been really worried if I hadn't read a few threads on here about it.
Hope your bunny gets better soon :(

Thanks, I just managed to have a look at it. No need to part fur as none down there. It still looks big but cannot tell if it is any smaller or bigger, so waiting on the other half to get back to he can take a look. The other is completely deflated but this one looks horrible. I hope he is going to be ok. The nurse said to go back on Monday but I am really worried it won't go down and he will be in pain.
If it isn't down tomorrow do you think I should take him in? I don't want him staying all weekend at the vets, not cos of money as he is insured so money isn't a factor, just I am scared and it was a nurse that checked him and dunno if I will feel better if a vet looks at it. Maybe I should take him in tomorrow to get a pain killer as she said it would have worn off yesterday which was just a day and half after the op. So that means by sat the one she gave him yesterday may have worn off, and don't want him in pain all weekend.
What shall I do :(

Oh poor little boy :( I really don't know what to suggest, I'm fairly new to bunny keeping :? If he is in pain he might stop eating which would not be good, maybe a trip to see a vet and another painkiller might be a good idea. Did they say what might have caused this to happen? It might be a good idea to edit the title of this thread too, to include 'help, blood filled testicle' or something along those lines, might have more people read it that way and hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me can help you out  I hope someone can help soon and that he feels better asap :(

Oooo thats nasty, it happened to one of my rescues despite me taking him to see them twice post-op as I wasnt happy. One sac filled with blood and after a couple of days it was still huge. He was on baytril X2 daily plus metacam and then the testical basically imploded, burst a hole and began to collapse in on itself :? took him back to the vets and he went on to Septrin (a stronger antibiotic) and the hole then began to scab over but it took nearly a month to be healed fully.

What should have happened is that the swollen testical was drained  by the vets. One of the very few times I have been unhappy with them.

I have phoned the vets and asked if I can take him in , in the morning, maybe I will ask if he can go tonight. Not sure what to do. The nurse said the blood has probably clotted, which is why it is hard. The nurse gave him a pain killer yesterday lunch time., so wonder if tonight will be too early to give another? Hmmm He is still eating so that is a plus I guess.
Im a bit worried and not sure what to do for the best. Both vets at my practise are experts in small animals which I was overjoyed to hear.
I am just worrying now. I may ring vets and ask.

My vet is also a rabbit specialist but they still make mistakes. Benson also ate throughout his ordeal but I did catch him grinding a few times. Was the pain relief from the op or was it additional?

He had pain relief from the op on Tuesday, then yesterday afternoon I had to take him in for the nurse to check all was well, which is when it was spotted, so she gave him another painkiller and more antibiotics at about 2 pm yesterday.
So not sure if that will wear off by tonight as don't want him going all through the night without any.
